Job description

Software Engineering Manager, Data Platform

Remote

Our mission is to be the technology backbone for strategic competition against peer adversaries. These missions – including intelligence, information operations, special activities, and perception management – are happening today and their success or failure will determine if we go to war tomorrow.

We've been on the front lines of these missions since 2019, and have grown to support a wide range of missions across all US service branches, multiple combatant commands, partner nations, interagency stakeholders, and the intelligence community. We deploy both hardware and software products to support people on the front lines that span collection, planning / assessments, and effects.

We've grown from $3M in run-rate revenue in 2021 to $80M in run-rate revenue today. We've been profitable since 2022 and have raised $91M in venture capital funding through Series B. We're valued at $1.5B as of 2025.

About the role

We're looking for a talented Software Engineering Manager to lead our data platform engineering team, specializing in data pipelines, data warehousing, and APIs that support developers building tools for the US DoD. You'll be tasked with leading a growing team responsible for structuring a diverse collection of multimodal datasets and providing various access patterns for internal developers including multi-media semantic search, entity search, and relational data primitives. This team plays a crucial role in powering most of Vannevar Labs' mature products, while also supporting new product initiatives. You will enable internal developers to move faster by solving common problems, reduce duplication of systems, and build the foundation that makes our products successful.

What you’ll do

  • Data Platform Development: Design and build scalable, reliable data pipelines, warehouses, and search capabilities for supporting internal developers.
  • Technology Improvement: Identify opportunities for improving developer experience and time-to-market for product engineers building with core datasets.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, DevOps, and product engineering teams, leveraging your communication skills to ensure effective teamwork.
  • Team Building: Develop and lead a strong cross-functional team that forms strong partnerships with developers across the organization.

What we look for

  • 3+ years of experience in leading platform engineering teams.
  • 10+ years of experience as a backend, data, or search engineer.
  • Strong technical expertise in building ETL pipelines, data warehousing, and designing APIs.
  • Ability to deliver scalable and reliable platform solutions over a diverse collection of data types.
  • High ethical standards for handling sensitive data, ensuring adherence to data privacy rules and compliance standards.
  • Willingness to travel to offsite and team syncs ~4 weeks per year.
  • Excellent communication skills, teamwork abilities, and project ownership.
  • Proficiency coding with Python, TypeScript, or similar.
  • Proficiency with PostgreSQL, or other relational databases.
  • Proficiency with Elasticsearch, or other search engines.
  • Proficiency with software development in AWS or other cloud services.

What we offer

The salary range for this position is $200,000 - $240,000 + equity + 401K match. Within the range, individual pay is determined by experience, relevant education, and/or training.

We’re proud to offer competitive benefits that support our employees. Some key highlights of our benefits package include:

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 100% remote first culture. You can work from anywhere in the US and all full-time employees have WeWork access.
  • Unlimited PTO including competitive vacation and holiday schedules.
  • Lifestyle stipends - Monthly mental health, wellness & fitness stipend, in-home office setup stipend, and family planning assistance.
  • Salary top-up during military reserve duty.
  • Fully paid parental leave.
  • Child and pet care reimbursement during travel.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
