Job summary

H&R Block, Inc. in Kansas City invites you to join the Embark 2027 Summer Internship, an 11-week program for Computer Science and Software Engineering students. You’ll work at our downtown KC headquarters and gain real-world software experience while earning $25/hour and housing stipend if eligible.

You’ll collaborate with QA, UX, and engineering teams, write and test code, participate in Agile ceremonies, and receive mentorship as you contribute to existing products and internal projects.

Qualifications

• Foundational knowledge of software development concepts, OOP, and SDLC.
• Experience with one or more programming languages listed above.
• Familiarity with cloud technologies, especially Azure.
• Exposure to APIs, microservices, event-driven architecture, or cloud-native apps.
• Familiarity with relational or NoSQL databases like SQL Server or Cosmos DB.
• Interest in mobile app development and native experiences.
• Knowledge of source control, CI/CD, and dev tools such as Git/Azure DevOps.
• Interest in AI-first software engineering and AI-assisted tools.
• Exposure to Generative AI, LLMs, ML, or AI-enabled apps.

Responsibilities

• Research, gather and organize data for special projects or reports.
• Collaborate with QA, UX, and other teams to align requirements and approach.
• Write, test, debug, and maintain code that supports real products and customers.
• Investigate technical problems and implement solutions with teammates.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies like stand-ups, sprint planning and reviews.
• Join code reviews and apply feedback to improve quality.
• Learn existing applications, systems, and development practices.
• Design, develop and maintain software components for HR Block business apps.
• Use standards and tools to build features and maintain functionality year over year.
• Receive mentorship while contributing to an established codebase.
