Position Title

Software Engineering Instructor

Overview

Per Scholas is seeking a Technical Instructor to deliver high-end technical training to underemployed and unemployed community residents, fostering economic development and quality of life improvement.

The instructor is self-directed, self-motivated, and comfortable making intermediate decisions to adapt processes and curriculum delivery. They collaborate with peers in learner support and work with the Managing Director to change policies, procedures, and strategic planning.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver technology skills training and assessments to prepare students for entry-level to mid-level careers in software development, including daily instruction, assessment administration, attendance, one‑on‑one tutoring, evaluation, and monitoring of student progress.
  • Be adept in learning new software tools, languages, and technologies as needed.
  • Work closely with the team to identify student needs, provide necessary support, and establish individualized achievement plans.
  • Tutor students as needed.
  • Collaborate with Career Advance team to ensure alumni complete additional requirements.
  • Maintain Salesforce database with student scores and attendance.
  • Coordinate with Career Advancement team to involve community volunteers as classroom speakers, mentors, and small group coaches.
  • Recommend students for specific employment opportunities.
  • Monitor student compliance to attendance and other program policies and address violations consistently, working with the Manager of Career Advancement on documents such as probationary and termination letters.
  • Connect students with resources to overcome barriers to success.
  • Create, submit, and maintain training curricula for approval and school files.
  • Collaborate with Program Design team to create student content for the PS Academy.
  • Commit a few hours per week to preparing lessons and materials, leveraging existing PS curriculum content.
  • Collaborate with co‑instructors or teaching assistants to provide prompt and meaningful feedback.
Professional Requirements
  • At least 2+ years of experience working on a software development team.
  • Work experience in both front‑end and back‑end development, and fluency in:
    • HTML5 and CSS3
    • Full‑stack JavaScript (strong JavaScript highly preferred)
    • At least one JS MV* framework (Angular, Backbone, or React preferred)
    • SQL databases (primarily PostgreSQL)
    • NoSQL (primarily MongoDB)
    • Express/Node.js
  • Bachelor’s (or Master’s) degree in a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with curriculum, syllabus development, and lesson planning.
  • Experience with student assessment and a talent for continuously evaluating the curriculum.
  • Must be able to comfortably and frequently lift 50lbs.

Salary

Target salary: $70,000 per year, with a range between $65,000 and $75,000, determined by geography and alignment with qualifications and experience.
