Software Engineer — Manufacturing Systems

Location: 100% onsite — Sorrento Valley, San Diego, CA Type: Full-time

Compensation: $72,000 – $132,000 base, plus equity No recruiters. This role requires daily onsite presence; the software you write runs against machines in our building.

About Fabric8Labs

Fabric8Labs is pioneering the future of additive manufacturing with our proprietary electrochemical 3D printing technology. We are transforming how advanced components are designed and manufactured for industries include semiconductors, aerospace, and medical devices.

Our production environment is distributed by design: printers and edge compute nodes on the floor, PostgreSQL clusters holding machine telemetry and process data, and cloud services on GCP tying it together. The systems we engineers, operators, and business teams depend on every day are built in-house.

The Role

We're looking for a Software Engineer to build and own the software layer connecting our printers to the people who run them. This means production dashboards our operators actually use, services that talk to hardware in real time, data flowing reliably from the shop floor into the systems that plan and track our work, and the integration points between our manufacturing systems and our ERP.

This is a hands‑on role with unusually direct feedback: when your dashboard is wrong, someone walks over and tells you, and when it's right, you watch a build finish because of it.

What You'll Do

  • Build and maintain the internal applications, dashboards, and services that power our manufacturing workflows
  • Design PostgreSQL schemas and write the queries and migrations behind them — you own how the application uses the database
  • Implement Python backend services and control logic that interact with printers and edge devices in real time
  • Build integrations between shop‑floor systems and our ERP: work order flow, material and lot tracking, part master data, production reporting
  • Ensure the traceability our customers require — records that let us answer which machine ran which job with which material lot, and prove it to an auditor
  • Work directly with hardware engineers, materials scientists, operators, and business stakeholders to turn "this is painful" into working software
  • Contribute to code reviews, CI/CD, and the engineering standards this team runs on

What We're Looking For

Must have

  • 4+ years building and shipping production software
  • Strong Python — this is the primary language for backend services and hardware interaction
  • Real PostgreSQL depth: schema design, understanding query plans, knowing why a query got slow and what to do about it
  • Comfortable in Linux for development, deployment, and debugging what's actually happening on a box
  • JavaScript for building practical, usable interfaces
  • The ability to sit with an operator or a materials scientist, understand the problem underneath what they asked for, and build the right thing

Strengthens your application

  • Experience with MES or ERP systems — particularly building integrations against one. Fluency with work orders, routing and operations, WIP, BOM, and lot/serial genealogy matters more to us than any specific platform.
  • GCP in production: Cloud SQL, IAM, VPC and hybrid connectivity between cloud and on-premise infrastructure
  • Building with AI tooling — LLM APIs, agentic workflows, or internal AI‑assisted tools. We use these actively and are expanding what we build with them.
  • Hardware/software integration, real-time systems, or industrial equipment
  • Docker, CI/CD pipelines, or Kubernetes
  • Flutter for cross‑platform operator‑facing apps

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and equity package
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with matching
  • Flexible PTO and sick time
  • Paid parental leave
  • Lunch & learns, snacks, and meals provided
  • Free parking and a collaborative workplace
  • The chance to build software for a manufacturing process that didn't exist a decade ago

Due to the nature of the work and the customers we serve, this position is subject to export control requirements. Applicants must be a U.S. person as defined under ITAR/EAR.

Fabric8Labs is an equal opportunity employer.
