Job summary

The American College of Surgeons in Chicago is seeking a Software Developer to design, develop, test, and maintain components for the National Cancer Database (NCDB) and related analytics systems. The role focuses on backend and web-based development, data processing workflows, and delivering reliable, secure software for cancer research and quality improvement.

This exempt position reports to the Manager, Information Technology, NCDB within the Division of Research and Optimal Patient Care.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience with database design, development, and analysis (Oracle, PL/SQL).
• 3+ years of Java application development experience, on J2EE preferably, with web services of Java Application Servers (JBoss, JRun, Oracle AS, JMS, Drools) and Apache Camel.
• C# experience is preferred.
• Firm understanding of relational database structure and processes.
• Experience with Java or similar object-oriented programming languages.
• Working knowledge of relational databases and SQL.
• Familiarity with version control systems and development tools.
• Strong analytical, documentation, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain application components supporting NCDB and related reporting systems.
• Implement enhancements, bug fixes, and new features under guidance from senior developers and technical leads.
• Support development of batch and real-time data processing workflows used for analytics, quality measures, and reporting.
• Assist with development and maintenance of reporting-related application logic and services.
• Develop and execute unit and integration tests to ensure application functionality and reliability.
• Collaborate with developers, analysts, statisticians, and IT partners across the software development lifecycle.
