Job summary

ASME is seeking a Social Media Intern to support our Strategic Communications team in creating engaging content and managing day-to-day audience engagement across ASME's social platforms.

The role offers a remote arrangement for six months, with 25-27 hours per week. NYC-area compensation varies; the New York metro salary range is estimated at $20–$22 per hour.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in accredited college/university pursuing degree in engineering, communications, marketing, journalism, media, or related discipline.
  • Portfolio showcasing your experience creating engaging social content is requested.
  • Proficiency in social media, digital content, and online culture; proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, schedule, and post engaging content across ASME's social platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok).
  • Write compelling copy that communicates ASME's mission clearly.
  • Create on-brand multimedia content like videos and graphics.
  • Collaborate with video/content teams to produce multimedia content.
  • Monitor posts, respond to comments, and foster positive engagement across ASME platforms.
  • Identify and engage with students, partners, and members of the engineering community.
  • Assist in planning social media campaigns supporting ASME's initiatives and events.
  • Support live event coverage (conferences, webinars, competitions).

From college students and early-career engineers to project managers, corporate executives, researchers and academic leaders, ASME's members are as diverse as the engineering community itself.

ASME is seeking a Social Media Intern who is passionate about social media, content creation, and online community building.

The Social Media Intern will have the opportunity to assist with various tasks and projects within our Strategic Communications department and gain hands-on experience supporting key functions related to creating engaging content and managing day-to-day audience engagement across our social platforms.

Responsibilities include assisting with items such as:
  • Develop, schedule, and post engaging content across ASME's social platforms including but may not be limited to: LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
  • Write compelling copy that communicates ASME's mission in an accessible and engaging way.
  • Create on-brand and visually appealing multimedia content such as videos and graphics to accompany social media copy.
  • Collaborate with video and content teams to produce multimedia content.
  • Monitor posts, conversations, respond to comments and messages, and foster positive engagement across all ASME-owned platforms.
  • Identify and engage with students, partners, and members of the engineering community.
  • Assist in planning and executing social media campaigns to support ASME's strategic initiatives, including events, publications, advocacy, and student engagement.
  • Support live event coverage, including conferences, webinars, and competitions.

To qualify for consideration, candidates must be enrolled in an accredited college or university working toward a degree (Associate's, Bachelor's or Master's) in engineering, communications, marketing, journalism, media, or a related discipline. Position requires working knowledge of social media, digital content, and online culture, proficiency in all Microsoft Office Applications and demonstrated excellence in the following:

  • Verbal and written communication skills and a professional demeanor
  • Analytical skills with a solution-oriented, streamlined approach
  • Organizational skills, detail orientation and ability to prioritize tasks despite competing priorities
  • Ability to work well independently or collaboratively as part of a team
  • Familiarity with major social platforms and best practices
  • Comfortable engaging with audiences in a professional and brand-safe manner
  • Knowledge of social media or design tools (e.g., Canva, Sprout, or similar) is a plus

A portfolio showcasing your experience creating engaging social content is also requested.

This role is eligible for a remote work arrangement. This is anticipated as a six-month assignment, and the candidate is expected to be available 25-27 hours per work week. Annual base salary may vary based on geographic location. The New York metro salary range for this position is estimated to be between $20-$22 per hour.
