Job summary

The University of South Carolina seeks a Social Media Coordinator to develop engaging, audience-focused content that supports its marketing and communications goals. You will create and manage digital/social media content promoting programs, highlight arts and sciences value, and strengthen engagement with students and alumni.

You will collaborate across the college to identify content opportunities, ensure brand-aligned messaging, and maximize reach on digital platforms.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a job-related field and 1+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of certification/training/education/experience.
  • Preferred: bachelor’s in communications, English, journalism or related field plus three years of relevant experience, or a master’s with one year of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Produces and implements social content including short-form video, graphics, photography, and writing across platforms.
  • Manages college content calendar to ensure timely, coordinated communications.
  • Maintains brand-aligned content across platforms and engages with audiences.
  • Coordinates social media advertising campaigns with budget and targeting.
  • Performs additional duties to support college communications objectives.

Social Media Coordinator

The Social Media Coordinator develops engaging, audience-focused content to support the college’s marketing and communications efforts. This position creates and manages digital and social media content that promotes academic programs, highlights the value of an arts and sciences education and research, and strengthens engagement with students and alumni. The coordinator works collaboratively across the college to identify content opportunities, develop consistent brand-aligned messaging, and maximize reach across digital platforms.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 1 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.
Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, English, journalism or a related field plus three years of relevant work experience, OR a master’s degree plus one year of relevant work experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of major social media platforms and best practices for the strategic dissemination of digital content in a higher education environment.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including word processing, digital media editing (photo and video), design software, and web-based tools for managing and scheduling social media content.
  • Strong written communication and editorial skills, with the ability to produce clear, accurate, and audience-appropriate content.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team setting to develop and deliver effective communications.
  • Experience capturing high-quality visual content using cameras or mobile devices to support institutional storytelling and engagement.
Job Duties
  • Job Duty Produces and implements social media content in alignment with established communications plans, including short-form video, graphic design, photography, and written materials across platforms. Attends classes, programs, and institutional events to capture timely and relevant content that supports strategic messaging. Conducts interviews with students, faculty, staff to gather information and develop compelling narratives. Coordinates and facilitates video production as needed, including recording content or arranging appropriate production support.

  • Job Duty Maintains and manages the college’s social media content calendar to ensure timely, coordinated, and strategic communications. Plans and develops social media content that supports institutional marketing and communications objectives. Monitors emerging social media trends, identifying relevant themes, formats, and best practices to inform content strategy. Shares insights and recommendations with the communications team and campus stakeholders to enhance and guide the college’s overall communications efforts.
  • Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 20

  • Job Duty Manages the college’s social media platforms, ensuring consistent, strategic, and brand-aligned content delivery across multiple platforms. Schedules and distributes content across platforms to maximize reach and engagement. Monitors and engages with audiences by responding to comments, messages, tags, and collaboration requests, in consultation with communications leadership as appropriate. Analyzes content performance and adjusts strategies based on data-driven insights. Prepares and delivers regular reports on social media metrics and outcomes to inform ongoing communications efforts.
  • Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 25

  • Job Duty Coordinates social media advertising initiatives in alignment with the college’s communications plans, under the direction of the Communications Director and Communications Manager. Develops and implements campaign elements, including audience targeting, creative assets, and budget parameters. Monitors and evaluates advertising performance metrics, providing analysis and recommendations to optimize campaign effectiveness.

  • Job Duty Performs additional duties as assigned in support of the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences’ communications and marketing objectives.
