Job Description

Position Summary

The Special Education Preschool Teacher is responsible for providing developmentally appropriate, specially designed instruction to preschool-aged children with disabilities. The teacher plans, implements, monitors, and evaluates individualized educational programs based on each child's unique strengths, needs, developmental level, and Individualized Education Program (IEP).

The teacher creates an inclusive, nurturing, and structured learning environment that promotes children's academic, communication, social-emotional, adaptive, motor, and independence skills. Instruction is aligned with the Indiana Early Learning Standards , applicable Indiana Academic Standards, and each student's IEP.

The teacher works collaboratively with families, paraprofessionals, related-service providers, administrators, and community partners to support student progress and successful transitions to kindergarten and future educational settings.

Professional Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate student records, lesson plans, assessment information, IEP documentation, and progress-monitoring data.
• Follow district policies, procedures, and special education regulations.
• Maintain professional and ethical standards for educators.
• Participate in required professional development.
• Stay current with evidence-based practices in early childhood special education.
• Maintain required Indiana educator licensure and professional credentials.
• Demonstrate knowledge of applicable federal and Indiana special education laws, regulations, and procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned by administration.

Professional Understanding

• Knowledge of early childhood development and developmentally appropriate practice.

• Knowledge of IEP development, writing, implementation, and progress monitoring.
• Ability to write measurable, individualized IEP goals based on student data and identified needs.

• Knowledge of the Indiana Early Learning Standards and their application to preschool curriculum and instruction.
• Knowledge of evidence-based practices for young children with disabilities.
• Knowledge of positive behavioral supports and classroom management.
• Ability to collect, interpret, and use student data to guide instruction.
• Ability to differentiate instruction for students with a wide range of developmental and educational needs.

• Ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to establish positive relationships with young children and their families.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and meet required timelines.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate sound professional judgment.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, or a related field.
• Possession of, or eligibility for, an appropriate Indiana Professional Educator License for the assignment.
• Knowledge of Indiana special education requirements and early childhood education practices.
• Ability to obtain and maintain all required district and state certifications and trainings.

Indiana recognizes Exceptional Needs licensure areas including Mild Intervention and Intense Intervention, and Indiana's educator standards include both Exceptional Needs and Early Childhood Education standards.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience teaching preschool-aged children with disabilities.
• Experience writing and implementing IEPs.
• Experience working with students with significant developmental, communication, behavioral, sensory, or physical needs.
• Experience with inclusive preschool programming.
• Experience collecting and analyzing progress-monitoring data.
• Experience collaborating with related-service providers and families.
• Knowledge of assistive technology and augmentative/alternative communication systems.
• Knowledge of developmentally appropriate behavior-support strategies.
• Experience supporting preschool-to-kindergarten transitions.
