Job summary

Columbia County Public Works seeks a skilled equipment operator to perform tasks involving a variety of vehicles and small machinery. You will operate pickup trucks with trailers, loaders, rollers, and other equipment, plus perform routine light maintenance and safety checks.

The role requires functionally following directions, strong hand–tool skills, and the ability to work outdoors in all weather. Two years of equipment experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school education preferred and two years’ experience in vehicle or small equipment operation.
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience accepted.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment for daily Public Works tasks.
  • Perform light maintenance such as checking/adding oil, fuel, water, and tires.
  • Complete street repairs, bridge maintenance, culverts, driveways, and ditch maintenance.
  • Identify hazards and report or correct them as needed.
  • Work independently under supervisor guidance; follow schedules and instructions.
  • Load and unload materials; operate chain saws, cement saws, and hand tools.

Job description

This position performs skilled manual work in the operation of a variety of vehicles/equipment in the performance of daily tasks or may specialize in the operation of specific types of vehicles/equipment. Examples of small equipment to be operated are pickup truck with trailer, multi-terrain loader with grapple rake and vibratory double drum roller. Employees in this class shall safely and skillfully operate standard vehicles and/or equipment in the performance of recurring tasks. Additionally, employees will perform light maintenance of vehicles and equipment operated.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Responsible for the satisfactory and safe operation of vehicles and equipment under all types of weather conditions on paved and dirt roads. Majority of tasks are performed outdoors and very frequently in extreme weather conditions. Subjected to insects, noxious fumes, and constant noise. Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical that screens for acceptable eyesight and hearing (with or without correction), the ability to sit for extended periods, and manual dexterity needed to operate job related machinery.

  • Operate all types of equipment associated with the operation of the Public Works Department
  • Check condition of truck or equipment before operating; perform light maintenance on vehicle such as checking and adding oil, fuel, water, air to tires, clean and wash vehicles or equipment
  • Complete street repairs, bridge maintenance, install culverts, repair driveways, and maintenance of ditches
  • Visually identifies hazards to safe operation of problem areas and reports or corrects them
  • Work is performed independently in accordance with definite instructions from a supervisor who reviews work through observation for compliance with work schedules and instructions
  • Performs skilled manual work in conjunction with job assignments; loads and unloads materials, operates chain saws, cement saws and various types of hand tools
  • Required to work during a local declared state of emergency

Minimum Training: High school education preferred and two years’ experience in vehicle and or small equipment operation, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License required.

  • Considerable knowledge of the practices applied to the safe and skillful operation and care of vehicles and equipment
  • Skill in using hand tools

  • Ability to learn, understand and abide by all traffic laws and County regulations pertaining to the safe operation of vehicles and equipment
  • Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate with fellow employees and the general public
  • Ability to take a teamwork approach to the job by cooperating with others, offering to help others when needed and considering large organization or team goals rather than individual concerns
