Job summary

Columbia County (FL) seeks a skilled equipment operator to drive and maintain multiple vehicles for the Public Works department, including dump trucks and accompanying machinery. Responsibilities include loading, unloading, and performing light maintenance; inspecting vehicles, spotting hazards, and working outdoors in all weather with other crew members.

Requirements: High School diploma or GED, one year of vehicle/equipment operation, and a Florida CDL Class B within 90 days of hire.

Qualifications

• High School education or GED preferred; one year of vehicle/equipment operation.
• Valid Florida CDL Class B license required within 90 days of hire.
• Pre-employment physical may be required to assess fitness for duty.

Responsibilities

• Operates or drives a dump truck and participates in loading/unloading materials.
• Checks vehicle condition before operation and performs light maintenance (oil, fuel, water, air; tires).
• Performs street repair, bridge maintenance, culvert installation, tree removal, driveway repairs, and ditch maintenance.
• Performs skilled manual tasks using chain saws, cement saws, and other hand tools.
• Visually identifies hazards and reports or corrects them.
• Works independently under supervisor guidance and may be called during local emergencies.

Job description

This position performs skilled manual work in the operation of several types of automotive vehicles and mobile motorized equipment. Employeesare responsible forsafeand efficient operationto include performing light maintenanceof automotive vehicles and mobile motorizedequipmentin the daily operationsof the public works department.

Working Conditions

Responsible for the satisfactory and safe operation of vehicles and equipment under all types of weather conditions on paved and dirt roads. Majority of tasks are performed outdoors and veryfrequentlyin extreme weather conditions. Subjected to insects, noxiousfumesand constant noise.Must?be able to pass a pre-employment physical that screens for?acceptable?eyesight and hearing (with or without correction), the ability to sit for extended periods, and manual dexterity needed to?operate?job relatedmachinery.??

• Work is performed independentlyin accordance withdefinite instructions from a supervisor who reviews work through observation for compliance with work schedules and instructions

• Required to work during a local declared state of emergency

Minimum Experience: High School education or G.E.D. preferred and oneyear’sexperience in vehicleandequipment operation, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Possession of a valid Florida CDL Class B Driver’s Licenserequiredwithinninety(90) days from hire date.

• Considerable knowledge of the practices applied to the safe and skillful operation and care of vehicles and equipment

• Ability to learn, understand and abide by all traffic laws and county regulationspertaining tothe safe operation of vehicles and equipment

• Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written directions

• Ability to communicate with fellow employees and thegeneral public
