Job description

Qualifications
  • Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) or obtain within 3 months of date of hire.
  • No minimum education required.
  • Experience working in a veterinary hospital environment with small animals.
  • Experience in calculating and administering medications intravenously, subcutaneously, intramuscular or orally.
  • Experience with surgical asepsis and how it relates to direct contamination of patients, instruments and sterile supplies.
  • Experience performing standard hospital sanitation/disinfection protocols.
  • Skills to use medical and dental terminology, and knowledge of basic dental disease processes and dental procedures.
  • Skill to clean, wrap and sterilize instruments and packs and perform sterile techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to engage effectively with diverse students, staff, clinicians, and clients and the skill to recognize and manage difficult situations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License.
  • Experience maintaining equipment in proper working order.
  • Skill to aseptically set up an operating room with instruments and equipment.
  • Knowledge of dental radiographic techniques and safety.

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Work occasional overtime and various hours on short notice (including covering staff shortages and holiday shifts).
