UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is seeking a Neurology/Neurosurgery Afterhours/Weekend Technician to support anesthesia, surgical procedures and patient care in a fast-paced, hospital setting. The position requires RVT licensure in California, strong patient management, and the ability to work independently with supervision as needed.

Responsibilities include anesthesia induction and monitoring, OR assistance, client communication, patient admission and discharge, and collaboration

Independent of supervision in a hospital setting, as a significant part of daily duties, responsible for treatment of patients with life-threatening illness or injury, whose conditions are likely to change on a moment-to-moment basis and inducing and monitoring anesthesia. Under the direction of the Small Animal Neurology Supervisor and the Neurology/Neurosurgery Service Chief, provide technical support to the Neurology/Neurosurgery service. Responsibilities include but are not limited to anesthesia induction, anesthesia monitoring, surgical preparation for various procedures, circulation in the operating room, training of various technical skills to students or residents, patient treatments, diagnostic sample collection and performing technical skills such as IV catheter placement, blood draws, urinary catheter placement. Additional responsibilities include client communication and education, patient admission and discharge, and working cooperatively with others to foster strong team commitments towards achieving Neurology service objectives.

Qualifications

• Must possess a California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license or hold a current license in another state and obtain a CA RVT license within 3 months from the date of hire.
• No minimum education required.
• Experience to independently provide treatment of patients whose conditions are likely to change on a moment-to-moment basis.
• Experience calculating drug dosages and administering medications intravenously, subcutaneously, intramuscular or orally.
• Experience performing venipuncture, placing vascular catheters, inducing anesthesia, monitoring anesthesia, and recovering patients from anesthesia, working independently with and without direct supervision.
• Experience in aseptic technique, surgical clipping and patient preparation, and circulation in an O.R.
• Experience to recognize normal and abnormal parameters for patients and how to respond accordingly.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to engage effectively with diverse students, staff, clinicians, and clients and the skill to recognize and manage difficult situations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in aseptic technique and circulation in an OR.
• Experience in a clinical hospital setting with various species performing sedation and anesthesia.
• Ability to recognize peri-anesthetic problems and patient concerns and to effectively communicate problems or concerns to the supervising veterinarian in a timely manner.
• Knowledge of normal laboratory values for cats and dogs.

The VMTH is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.
