Nikon SLM Solutions AG in Long Beach, CA, seeks a Material Parameter Development Engineer to develop, test and optimize SLM process parameters for supplied materials and layer thicknesses. You will review market needs, define qualification processes, and lead projects with customers and external research partners.

Responsibilities include collaborating with international teams, performing full material characterization, and preparing reports and white papers to showcase results and drive process

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or equivalent in engineering field (materials science, mechanical, aerospace) or physics with LPBF focus.
• Experience with CAM tools: Magics, Build Processor, Netfab, NX.
• Strong general scientific research knowledge.
• General knowledge of welding technology.
• Deep analytical skills.
• Material characterization skills.
• Experience in metal additive manufacturing process development and material qualification.
• Lab environment material characterization understanding.
• Process understanding and experience operating SLM machines.
• Knowledge of laser-powder interaction.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with internal and external customers, technicians, engineers, and scientists in an international environment on material science and parameter development topics.
• Develop parameter sets for new and existing materials to be processed by SLM and perform full qualification focusing on material performance, geometry, process stability and productivity.
• Full material characterization (mechanical properties, density analysis, microstructure investigations, SEM, EBSD, fracture surfaces, roughness).
• Prepare deep reports of experiments for internal use and write external white papers and conference presentations.
• Execute deep statistical analysis of material properties data to ensure high confidence level and material performance.
• Deep analysis and understanding of machine and process capabilities with regards to material performance over the full build envelope.
• Deep analytical skills and outstanding understanding of material systems.
