Job summary

The Welder 2 position at The Greenbrier Companies, Inc. performs quality welding of railcar parts and fixtures, visually inspects welds, and repairs defective welds by fitting components into jigs and fixtures using arc welding equipment.

You will read blueprints, operate weld machines, maintain safety standards, assist in training fellow welders, and contribute to continuous improvement on the assembly line.

Qualifications

  • Ability to pass applicable weld assessments to perform work as a welder 2.
  • Ability to use weld gauges and computers.
  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints or weld drawings and procedures.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Ability to learn to operate a forklift and overhead crane and complete certifications required through company training.

Responsibilities

  • Fits, aligns, and clamps tank car parts to prepare for welding and performs complicated arc welding on parts and sub-assemblies.
  • Operates weld machine maintaining heat and speed of travel to ensure penetration and weld bead size.
  • Visually inspects welds, repairs defects, and performs minor repairs to equipment and occasional flame cutting.
  • Assists in training other welders by on-the-job instruction.
  • Reads blueprints or weld drawings and procedures to guide weld work.
  • Ensures safety and housekeeping standards are met and performs other duties as directed by the Production Group Leader.
