Job summary

City of Durango Parks and Recreation seeks a Skating Instructor to teach beginner skaters ages 4–15 foundational skills through fun, age-appropriate lessons on the ice. You will create a safe, encouraging environment while guiding participants through progressing skill levels.

Responsibilities include planning engaging lessons, monitoring ice safety, and communicating clearly with children and parents. The role offers perks like free recreation center access, transit pass, and wellness

Qualifications

• Knowledge of ice skating and fundamentals of instruction.
• Experience with children in educational or recreational settings preferred.
• CPR/AED and first aid certifications required or obtainable.
• Ability to read and write at a basic level for job performance.

Responsibilities

• Lead Learn to Skate lessons for beginner skaters ages 4–15.
• Teach foundational skating skills using age- and skill-appropriate activities and instruction.
• Help skaters build confidence and progress through the program’s different skill levels.
• Plan and organize engaging lessons that support participant learning and development.
• Maintain a safe learning environment and monitor ice conditions and participant safety.
• Communicate clear expectations and instructions to participants and parents.
• Work cooperatively with other instructors and Parks and Recreation staff.
• Participate in preseason orientation, staff meetings, and in-service training.
• Arrive on time and prepared for assigned lessons.
• Care for program equipment, supplies, records, and facilities.
• Follow department policies and procedures and represent the City of Durango professionally.
