Job summary

Village of DeForest is seeking a Lead Ice Skating Instructor to oversee Learn to Skate programs at the DeForest Yards Ice Rink. You will lead lessons, supervise assistants, and ensure safety for skaters of all ages, including beginners.

The role requires skating ability, strong communication, and leadership. This is a seasonal, part-time position with on-ice duties and a focus on a welcoming environment for families.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18+ years old.
  • Experience as skating instructor/coach or competitive skater preferred.
  • Knowledge of Learn to Skate USA curriculum or equivalent preferred.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills; ability to direct assistant instructors.
  • Must enjoy working with children and families in a positive, encouraging manner.
  • Ability to skate confidently and demonstrate basic through intermediate skills.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain prior to program start) preferred.
  • Background check required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, lead, and instruct Learn to Skate lessons according to curriculum and skill levels.
  • Supervise assistant instructors and provide guidance for consistency and safety.
  • Demonstrate proper skating techniques and safety practices.
  • Create a welcoming and encouraging environment for all participants.
  • Maintain focus on participant safety, including helmet use and on-ice supervision.
  • Communicate progress, expectations, and safety with parents and staff.
  • Assist with set-up and clean-up of on-ice equipment and teaching materials.
  • Report attendance, incidents, and equipment needs to the program supervisor.
  • Serve as the on-site lead during scheduled sessions.

Job description

The Lead Ice Skating Instructor is responsible for overseeing and delivering high-quality ice-skating instruction for the DeForest Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department’s Learn to Skate programs, including Little Skaters, Snowplow Sam 1–5, and Basic 1–6 levels. This position ensures a fun, safe, and supportive environment for skaters of all ages and abilities while leading a team of assistant instructors.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plan, lead, and instruct Learn to Skate lessons according to program curriculum and participant skill levels.
  • Supervise assistant instructors and provide guidance to ensure consistency and safety during classes.
  • Demonstrate proper skating techniques and safety practices.
  • Create a welcoming and encouraging environment for all participants, including young or first-time skaters.
  • Maintain a strong focus on participant safety, including proper helmet use and on-ice supervision.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, staff, and participants regarding progress, expectations, and safety.
  • Assist with set-up and clean-up of on-ice equipment and teaching materials.
  • Report attendance, incidents, and equipment needs to the program supervisor.
  • Serve as the on-site lead during scheduled sessions, ensuring smooth program operations.
Qualifications
  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Previous experience as a skating instructor, coach, or competitive skater required.

Job Information
  • Classes are Sundays from 3:45pm – 6:00pm at the DeForest Yards Ice Rink. This position is seasonal with an average of 3 hours a week, with additional prep and training time as assigned.
  • Programs offered September – May.
  • $30.00 per hour
