Job summary

3M HEALTHCARE is seeking a Simulation Assistant to set up and operate simulation and AV/IT equipment across training sessions. The role supports instructors, coordinates maintenance, and helps manage inventory and purchasing for simulation activities.

The OAIV will assist with onboarding, scenario execution, and ensuring a safe, functional learning environment. This is a part‑time, hourly position based in Sacramento, CA.

Qualifications

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • At least two years’ experience as a technician in a simulation centre.
  • Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting simulation, hospital, and IT/AV equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Set up simulation equipment for activities and center events.
  • Maintain storage areas and equipment to high standards.
  • Attend vendor trainings for specialized simulation equipment.
  • Operate hospital/AV equipment within simulation environments.
  • Coordinate with IT/AV for system operation and maintenance.
  • Assist with scenario delivery, debriefing, and staff onboarding.

Simulation Assistant

Job Summary

The Office Assistant IV (OAIV) – Simulation Technician is responsible for setting up, operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and performing basic repairs on simulation equipment (hospital‑type and AV/IT equipment). The role supports the Simulation Director by orienting faculty and learners to technical equipment, coordinating staff and maintenance scheduling, managing inventory and purchasing functions, and assisting in the development, setup, delivery, and takedown of simulation education sessions. The OAIV also assists with staff onboarding and other operational activities as required.

Key Accountabilities
  • Simulation Equipment
    • Set up and operate equipment for each simulation activity and for overall center activities.
    • Maintain storage areas, clinical and educational equipment to a high standard, including cleaning and basic maintenance.
    • Attend vendor training sessions and conferences for specialized training on simulation, hospital, and AV/IT equipment.
    • Operate and troubleshoot hospital equipment (beds, pumps, ventilators, etc.) in simulation/in‑situ environments.
    • Control, program, maintain, and troubleshoot patient simulators (voice and physiological parameters) during scenario‑based training, open days, and demonstrations.
    • Maintain equipment inventory and schedule of maintenance; coordinate with vendors for repair/servicing when needed.
  • Simulation Environment
    • Set up simulation rooms using appropriate checklists for environment and scenario.
    • Operate equipment/AV systems in rooms, including supplies and moulage.
    • Involve in takedown and debriefing processes.
  • AV/LMS
    • Have knowledge of LMS (Laerdal Medical Systems) and AV systems; advise clinical educators to maximize use.
    • Oversee installation, testing, and operation of IT and AV equipment; delegate to technicians when required.
    • Operate AV/LMS systems within the overall simulation infrastructure; troubleshoot AV system components such as cameras and recordings.
    • Use mobile AV systems and operate AV remotely.
  • Scenario
    • Participate in scenario planning and design; provide input on scenario integrity.
    • Assist in running scenarios, including directing and coordination.
    • Provide educational support such as debriefing and feedback; instruct actors or serve as manikin voice.
  • Quality Assurance
    • Maintain systems, staff availability, and equipment to high standards under the Simulation Director.
    • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
    • Implement quality improvement programs using simulation to promote standards and policies.
  • Inventory Control / Purchasing
    • Maintain stock levels to meet maintenance needs.
    • Recommend purchases of equipment, supplies, and materials for simulation‑based sessions.
  • Advisory
    • Introduce instructors to the appropriate modalities of simulation training (mannequin, part‑task trainer, SP, etc.).
    • Advise instructors during scenario design and execution.
    • Collaborate with simulation team members to develop training programmes and clinical scenarios.
  • IT/Technical Duties
    • Coordinate with Technical Services (IM and Biomedical Engineering) to keep the AV/IT system, simulation equipment, and hospital‑type equipment operational.
    • Contribute to strategic planning of technical infrastructure in line with the centre’s mission.
    • Report technical issues or risks to the Operations Manager that could impact service delivery.
  • Coordination of Activities
    • Maintain awareness of scheduling issues and availability of physical and technical resources.
    • Coordinate operations manuals with vendors and supply teaching aids to support clinical educators.
  • Professional Development
    • Participate in professional and educational activities to maintain competencies and up‑to‑date knowledge.
  • Other
    • Assist with piloting and delivery of simulation‑based training and other educational activities during commissioning and operational phases.
    • Troubleshoot technical issues with mannequins and equipment to ensure functionality for course requirements.
    • Support learners in maintaining a safe learning environment.
Requirements
  • Post‑high school education preferred.
  • Training or experience equivalent to two years of clerical experience or related education.
  • At least two years’ experience as a technician in a simulation centre, including maintaining an equipment inventory and maintenance schedule.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot simulation, hospital, and IT/AV equipment and software in a clinical education environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of office procedures and ability to interpret needs and take appropriate actions.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non‑technical audiences.
  • Adaptability, resourcefulness, and willingness to acquire new skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Experience with computer database systems, word processing, and spreadsheet software.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
  • Customer‑service and team‑oriented attitude.
Salary

Part‑time, hourly: $33 per hour.
