Job summary

West Virginia Department of Transportation seeks a Transportation Engineer 1 to serve as the Signal & ITS Design Engineer within the Engineering Division. The role oversees the daily operations of the Signal & ITS Design Unit, drafting in-house plans for traffic signal renovations across the state and guiding consultant projects through scopes, budgets, and selection.

Preference is given to candidates with a WV P.E.

Qualifications

• Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of West Virginia or eligible by comity within 6 months of hire.
• Bachelor’s degree in civil, electrical, mechanical, industrial, petroleum, mining, environmental, engineering technology, or related engineering field from ABET-accredited program.
• Degree transcript or diploma must be attached for employment consideration.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional engineering work as the Signal & ITS Design Engineer.
• Manage daily operations of the Signal & ITS Design Unit and prepare in-house design plans for traffic signal renovations across WV.
• Oversee consultant projects: scopes of work, independent fee estimates, consultant selection, and plan reviews for WVDOH specs and standards.
• Update WVDOH Signal and ITS publications and resolve signal technology issues during construction.
• Review manufacturer shop drawings for signal poles/accessories and coordinate with utilities, cities, and counties through design and construction.

Education

P.E. license WV or comity within 6 months

ABET-accredited engineering degree (civil/electrical/mechanical/industrial/mining/environmental/eng tech)
