Norfolk Southern invites applicants for the Electrical Apprentice Signal Trainee position in Altoona, PA. The program builds a pipeline for future Signal Maintainer roles through structured classroom instruction and field training, with travel across seniority districts and a guaranteed on-call schedule during training.

Training lasts about 52 weeks, including three 3-week classroom sessions at the NS Training Center in McDonough, GA, plus hands-on field training with crews.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• High school diploma or GED or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Must obtain Class A CDL within 90 days of hire (training provided).
• Must pass FRA drug and alcohol screening.

Responsibilities

• Perform inspections and testing of signal systems and grade crossings.
• Install, maintain, and repair signal equipment including lights and switch machines.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics and technical diagrams.
• Operate hand tools and electrical testing instruments.
• Document inspections and repairs accurately.
• Work safely in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions.
• Respond to on-call assignments, including nights and weekends.
