Job summary

Tarte Inc. is seeking a hands-on Shopify Developer in New York City. The role covers building and maintaining custom Shopify themes, implementing features from requirements to release, and optimizing performance.

You will work across teams on promotions, search, and integrations while staying current with AI-assisted tooling. You will collaborate with Engineering, Design, Product, Merchandising, Marketing, and Operations to shape the customer experience and enable scalable ecommerce solutions

Qualifications

• 5+ years of Shopify development experience, preferably with Shopify Plus and a DTC ecommerce brand.
• Strong proficiency in Shopify Liquid, HTML5, CSS3/SCSS, and modern JavaScript (ES6+).
• Experience with Shopify Online Store 2.0, metafields, metaobjects, theme customization, and Shopify Admin/Storefront APIs (GraphQL).
• Ability to build reusable frontend components, implement complex shopping logic, and integrate third‑party services using REST or GraphQL APIs.
• Experience with Git, pull requests, code reviews, debugging, and release workflows.
• Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work cross‑functionally and communicate clearly with both technical and non‑technical partners.

Responsibilities

About the Role

Build shopping experiences that bring beauty to life at tarte, a global beauty brand with the entrepreneurial spirit of a founder-led business. We’re looking for a hands-on Shopify developer who brings fresh ideas and enjoys solving problems, with work spanning product launches, influencer activations, and everyday shopping.

You’ll partner across Engineering, Design, Product, Merchandising, Marketing, and Operations to take features from idea to launch and see your work directly shape the customer experience. We value curiosity and knowledge sharing, including helping non‑technical teammates build the skills and confidence to do more in Shopify admin and our backend tools.

This role is hybrid and based in New York City, with two days per week in office required

What You’ll Own

Storefront Development & Custom Experiences

Writing code is a core part of this role. You’ll build and maintain custom Shopify themes, templates, sections, and interactive components using Liquid, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. You’ll support key shopping experiences across PDPs, collection pages, cart, and customer accounts.

Feature Development & Delivery

You’ll take ownership of assigned features from technical requirements through development, testing, and release. You’ll solve problems proactively and work with the team to deliver high‑quality solutions.

Promotions & Ecommerce Functionality

You’ll develop and enhance custom promotional features, including gift-with-purchase (GWP), bundles, discounts, product merchandising, and other conversion‑driving shopping experiences.

Search & Product Discovery

You’ll support on‑site Shopify search, filtering, collection merchandising, and product discovery enhancements that improve the customer shopping journey.

Performance & Optimization

Site performance, accessibility (WCAG 2.2), and the overall customer experience will remain top of mind. You’ll improve site speed, Core Web Vitals, mobile responsiveness, and overall storefront performance.

Shopify Integrations

You’ll implement and maintain third‑party applications, Shopify APIs, and custom integrations that support our merchandising, marketing, and customer experiences.

Testing & Technical Quality

You’ll troubleshoot production issues, participate in code reviews and deployments, and partner with QA to identify regressions and ensure reliable, high‑quality releases.

AI‑First Development

We’re actively exploring how AI can make the way we build, test, and deploy our ecommerce experiences even smarter. You’ll use AI‑powered development tools to improve productivity, troubleshooting, code quality, and workflow efficiency, and you’ll look for new ways AI can enhance the shopping experience. You bring a practical and curious perspective on where AI can create meaningful value.

What You Bring

What We’re Looking For:

• 5+ years of Shopify development experience , preferably with Shopify Plus and a direct-to-consumer (DTC) ecommerce brand
• Strong proficiency in Shopify Liquid, HTML5, CSS3/SCSS, and modern JavaScript (ES6+)
• Experience with Shopify Online Store 2.0, metafields, metaobjects, theme customization, and the Shopify Admin/Storefront APIs (GraphQL)

• Experience with React or other modern frontend frameworks
• Familiarity with Shopify Functions, Checkout Extensibility, or customer account extensions
• Experience with AWS/serverless infrastructure, webhooks, or custom backend integrations
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as Codex or Claude Code
• Experience working within founder‑led, DTC, beauty, fashion, or lifestyle brands
