Job summary

Austal USA in San Diego seeks a Safety Manager to lead a team of Safety Representatives, Competent Persons, and admin staff, ensuring safe shipyard repair and production activities in line with corporate policy and regulations.

You will maintain SDS data, develop preventive programs, supervise inspections, coordinate with fire departments and government counterparts, and act as IC Safety Officer while ensuring compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, NAVSEA, and ISO 45001 standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering science, Health & Safety and/or environmental fields is desired.
• Proficient in OSHA regulations, consensus standards.
• Eight (8) years’ related experience in an industrial setting.
• Experience working in manufacturing or a shipyard environment.
• Familiarity with NAVSEA standards.
• CSP or able to obtain within 2 months of hire.
• Current certifications in First Aid, CPR, OSHA, 30-hour Maritime Safety and Industry Standards plus familiarity with 29 CFR Part 1915 highly desirable.
• Familiarity with Serious Injury and Fatality programs.
• Knowledgeable in Safety & Health management systems such as ISO 45001.
• Root cause analysis software experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead a safety team including Safety Representatives, Competent Persons, and Administrative staff.
• Maintain and update San Diego safety procedures.
• Oversee fire watch and hot work permit processes.
• Act as Incident Command Safety Officer.
• Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and customer requirements.
• Develop and implement preventive safety programs.
• Conduct health, safety, and environmental investigations.
• Provide safety training and report performance metrics.
