Job summary

Sierra Sheet & Plate Inc in Covington, GA is seeking a Shipping & Receiving Operator to count, weigh, measure, verify materials, and prepare accurate shipping documents.

You will build crates, coordinate with carriers, operate forklifts, drive locally as needed, and maintain safe, organized loading areas in compliance with DOT and OSHA.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Prior shipping/receiving experience preferred.
• Forklift certified or able to become certified within 1 month of hire.
• Ability to read and interpret shipping documents, packing slips and work orders.
• Basic math and measurement skills for counting and verification.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license; CDL Class A preferred for applicable driving duties.
• Must meet company and DOT driving eligibility requirements if assigned driver responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Count, weigh, measure, and verify materials for shipments.
• Prepare and complete accurate documentation including receivers, packing slips, and shipping labels.
• Package metal products and build crates, pallets, and boxes.
• Secure packages for shipment using strapping, banding, and protective materials.
• Coordinate carriers and schedule freight pickups.
• Load and unload trucks using forklifts or other equipment; stage materials.
• Maintain clean, organized shipping and receiving areas.
• Communicate with management, coworkers, and Quality to resolve shipment issues.
• Operate company vehicles for local pickups and deliveries as assigned.
• Complete driver inspections and maintain delivery logs; CDL may be required.

Shipping & Receiving OperationsCount, weigh, measure, and verify materials for all incoming and outgoing shipments.Prepare and complete accurate documentation including receivers, packing slips, and shipping labels. Compare incoming shipments against purchase orders, and ERP systemPackage metal products include cleaning, deburring, stenciling, and marking materials as required.Build and assemble crates, pallets, and boxes using nail guns, saws, and other hand tools.Secure packages and materials for shipment using strapping, banding, and protective materials.Carrier coordination, schedule freight pick-ups with shipping carriers (e.g. UPS, FEDEX,LTL FREIGHT)Material HandlingLoad and unload trucks using forklifts or other material handling equipment.Stage materials for shipment or storage in designated areas.Maintain clean, organized shipping and receiving areas to ensure efficient workflow.Safety & ComplianceFollow all company safety protocols, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).Operate forklifts and other equipment safely, adhering to company and OSHA regulations.Work in varied environmental conditions, including hot or cold temperatures and non-air-conditioned areas.Team CollaborationCommunicate effectively with management, coworkers, and the Quality team to resolve shipment issues.Support team members and assist with other duties as required by business needs.Driving & Delivery (as assigned):Operate company vehicles for local pickups and deliveries, including straight trucks and flatbeds.Ensure all materials are secured and transported safely, following DOT and company regulations.Complete driver inspections, maintain clean vehicles, and report any issues promptly.Maintain accurate delivery logs and obtain delivery confirmations when applicable.CDL may be required depending on vehicle class operated.High School Diploma or GED preferred.Prior experience in shipping, receiving, or warehouse operations preferred,Basic computer proficiency, and familiarity with shipping software or ERP systemsForklift certified (or able to become certified within 1 month of hire).Ability to read and interpret shipping documents, packing slips, and work orders.Basic math and measurement skills for accurate counting and verification.Strong verbal and written communication skills.Valid driver’s license required; CDL Class A preferred for applicable driving duties.Must meet company and DOT driving eligibility requirements if assigned driver responsibilities.
