Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Analyze jobs from start to finish ensuring proper and safe work methods.
  • Read and interpret work specifications, blueprints, technical manuals, and design sketches to determine ship fitting process.
  • Identify and mark reference lines and location of holes to be drilled for welding or riveting.
  • Align parts using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges and mauls.
  • Install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members.
  • Prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts.
  • Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
  • Roll, bend, flange, cut and shape plates, beams and other heavy metal parts using shop machinery.

Salary Range: $28.42 To $33.35 Hourly

MHI Ship Repair & Services is a major marine repair and conversion contractor serving the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration and Commercial ship owners and operators worldwide. Our shipyard is conveniently located in the Mid-Atlantic region at the port of Hampton Roads, Norfolk Virginia.

MHI is looking for an experienced Shipfitters. Depending on skill level, some of the job duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Analyzing jobs from start to finish ensuring proper and safe work methods used.
  • Reading and interpreting work specifications, blueprints, technical manuals, and design sketches to determine appropriate ship fitting process.
  • Identifying and marks reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines and marking location of holes to be drilled for welding or riveting.
  • Aligning parts in relation to each other, using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
  • Installing packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members.
  • May prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts.
  • May tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
  • May roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams and other heavy metal parts using shop machinery, such as plate rolls, presses, bending brakes and joggle machines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience as a shipfitter.
  • Must have knowledge of tools, equipment and machining processes of ship fitting trade.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others.
  • Must be a steady, reliable worker.
