Job summary

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is hiring a Shipfitter with 10+ years of experience. Fitters read blueprints to place and fabricate steel structures, using tools to measure, cut, grind, fit, align and tack weld parts across ships and dry docks.

Relocation assistance ($5,000 lump sum) and a $5,000 sign-on bonus are offered. Candidates must meet physical requirements and pass a respirator fit test. Telework is not available; relocation is encouraged.

Qualifications

• Must have 10 or more years of fitting/fabrication experience.
• Must have worked for Newport News Shipbuilding for 1.5 years.
• Must be able to work at extreme heights or in small confined spaces.
• Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb.
• Must be able to lift 40 lbs and pass a respirator fit test.
• Must be able to work assigned shifts as production needs.
• Must be able to pass a Physical Agility Test.
• Must be willing to take measurements or to learn them.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret blueprints to place, maneuver or fabricate steel structures.
• Use tools to measure, cut, grind, fit, align and tack weld parts ranging from a fingernail to large sub-assemblies.
• Build interior structures such as hatches, doors, bulkheads, etc.
• Work across shops, platens, concrete and metal structures, dry-docks, and onboard ships to support new construction, repair and overhaul.

Salary Range: $83,491.20 to $85,196.80 (estimate based on experience). Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and other factors.

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is hiring Shipfitters with a minimum of 10 years of experience. Fitters are often called the "carpenters" of shipbuilding or "Artists of Steel" because they read and interpret blueprints to place, maneuver or fabricate steel structures. Fitters use tools to measure, cut, grind, fit, align and tack weld parts ranging from a fingernail to large sub-assemblies, and their scope includes building interior structures such as hatches, doors, bulkheads, etc. They attend and become qualified through the shipyard’s state-of-the-art welding school and work across shops, platens, concrete and metal structures, dry-docks, and onboard ships to support new construction, repair and overhaul.

NNS is offering a $5,000 lump sum payment for relocation assistance and a $5,000 sign-on bonus.

Experience

• Auto mechanic or autobody work
• Structural iron work (welding, building structural frameworks, understanding of metals)

Nice to Have
