Job summary

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is seeking a skilled Shipfitter. You will read and interpret drawings, plan assembly, and tack weld parts from small to large sub-assemblies forming the ship’s structural body.

The role requires a certificate in Shipfitting or related field, the ability to work at heights and in confined spaces, and physical endurance to lift 40 lbs and pass a respirator test. It is a full-time position with overtime as needed.

Qualifications

• Must have a certificate or diploma in Shipfitting or related field from a recognized program.
• Candidates must be able to work at extreme heights or in small confined spaces.
• Must kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb.
• Must lift 40 lbs and pass a respirator fit test.
• Must be able to work assigned shift and overtime as needed.

Responsibilities

• Read, interpret, plan and execute from drawings and procedures.
• Build in-place interior structures, hatches, doors and bulkheads to complete ship steel work.
• Work in shops, platens, dry-docks and onboard ships for new construction, repair and overhauls.
• Climb and work in high areas or cramped spaces and perform tasks under varying conditions.
• Support construction, repair and overhaul projects as required.
