Job summary

HII Newport News Shipbuilding is seeking a skilled Shipfitter to read, interpret, plan and execute from drawings. You will measure, cut, grind, fit, align and tack weld parts from small components to large sub-assemblies forming the ship's structural body.

The role requires a certificate or diploma in Shipfitting or related field, physical ability for heights and confined spaces, and willingness to learn new techniques while supporting ship construction, repair and overhaul at various work sites.

Qualifications

• Certificate or diploma in Shipfitting or a directly related field.
• Ability to work at extreme heights or in small confined spaces.
• Must be able to lift 40 lbs and pass a respirator fit test.
• Able to work assigned shift as production needs.
• Able to do overhead work.
• Able to work outdoors and wear a respirator.
• Able to work overtime as needed.
• Willing to learn measurements.

Responsibilities

• Read, interpret, plan and execute from drawings and procedures.
• Measure, cut, grind, fit, align and tack weld parts from small to large assemblies.
• Build in-place interior structures, hatches, doors, bulkheads and related steel work.
• Work in shops, platens, dry-docks and onboard ships to support construction, repair and overhaul.
