Job summary

Project Renewal is seeking a Shift Supervisor for Atlas Men’s Shelter in Brooklyn, NY. The role directs Residential Aides across shifts to ensure safe, clean, and respectful service to clients in a 24/7 shelter environment.

You will train staff, oversee crisis response, and coordinate with clinical teams to aid clients’ access to medications and services. A High School Diploma or GED, 2+ years in this field, and CPR/First Aid and Narcan certs are required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 2 years experience serving underserved populations including homelessness, substance use, mental health, LGBTQIA+.
  • First Aid/CPR certification required.
  • Narcan certification required within 15 days of training.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Residential Aides and ensure adequate shift coverage.
  • Provide staff training through on-site sessions and referrals to external training.
  • Oversee facility operations and respond to emergencies during shift.
  • Orient new arrivals and explain shelter rules, assign beds and supplies.
  • Attend daily meetings and report client observations to Case Managers.
  • Supervise linen removal, proper bagging, and vendor liaison for laundry.
  • Assist in meal service in cafeteria for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • Help clinical staff in connecting clients with medications and addressing issues.
  • Record incidents in Logbook and escalate priority incidents to supervisors.
  • Escort clients as requested by Case Managers and supervise client activities.
  • Support recreational activities to engage clients and promote participation.
  • Distribute transportation cards from Social Services staff and supervise aides.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Program Description:

Atlas Men’s Shelter is a 100 bed 24/7 general population emergency shelter for homeless men. Our comprehensive services include case management, individual and group counseling, recreational activities, and housing placement assistance. Additionally, on-site medical and psychiatric services are offered in addition to referrals to a wide variety of resources and services that our clients may need.

Position Overview:

Under the general direction of the Assistant Shelter Director, with some latitude for independent action, the Shift Supervisor directs a staff of Residential Aides in providing direct assistance to the clients in adhering to the rules and regulations of the shelter; performs related work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Depending upon the shift, the essential duties of the Shift Supervisor include but are not limited to the following activities:

  • Provides guidance and direction to the Residential Aides ensuring adequate coverage for each shift; monitoring their performance and initiating administrative action as warranted
  • Provides training of staff through on-site sessions as well as referrals to outside training sources.
  • Oversees the operation of the facility, including handling emergency and crisis situations during their tour of duty
  • Provides orientation for new arrivals, informing them of shelter rules and regulations, giving them a tour of the facility, assigning a locker and a bed, and giving them their basic supplies, including sheets, towels and toiletries
  • Participates in daily meetings and shares any observations on the behavior of clients that might be useful to the Case Managers
  • Oversees scheduled removal of linens by the Residential Aides, ensuring that proper protective protocols are followed and that the linens are properly bagged for pick up by the vendor contracted to launder them
  • Assists in the cafeteria with meals being served to clients at breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Assist the weekend and evening clinical staff in getting clients access to their medications and responding to client issues
  • Ensures that any incident is recorded in the Logbook, but especially that priority incidents are called in to the Shelter Director, Assistant Shelter Director, Director of Social Services, and DHS and that documentation is subsequently provided to supervisory staff in a timely manner
  • Performs escort duties or ensures escorts are provided to clients as requested by the Case Managers
  • Participates in some of the recreational activities offered to the clients, encouraging them to actively participate in order the gain the benefits of the activity
  • Distributes to clients any transportation cards received from the Social Services staff
  • Provides supervision to a team of Residential Aides
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Shelter Director, or other supervisory staff

Physical Activities:

While performing the duties of this position, Residential Aides must be able to climb stairs, walk throughout the facility, stand to talk to clients and staff, sit for extended periods of time at the computer, and bend, or squat to get records from the files and lift up to 30lbs unassisted while helping clients with their property pack-up and distribution. Assistance may be provided for heavier weights.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of two (2) years familiarity working with underserved populations, including but not limited to, homelessness, substance use, mental health and LGBTQIA+ populations
  • First Aide/CPR
  • Narcan Certified; Receipt of certification is required within 15 days of completion of training

Preferred Skills:

  • Team Building: Ability to work with staff to enhance their skills; ability to foster, through demonstration, team spirit, enabling staff to overcome the challenges of providing needed services to the client population.
  • Organizational: The ability to assess work requests, creates order of priorities, and assigns work to staff and monitor its timely completion.
  • Communication: Excellent oral, writing, and listening skills.
  • Interpersonal: An ability to interface with clients as well as all levels of staff.
  • Computer : Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Language: Bilingual or multilingual a plus.
