We are looking for well-rounded leaders who can manage people, coordinate equipment and material movement, respond to changing priorities, and keep operations running safely and efficiently. Supervisors must be comfortable working in the field, making decisions, and holding employees accountable.

Experience in one or more of the primary operating areas is strongly preferred. Candidates must be willing and able to learn additional departments and provide leadership wherever operational support is needed.

Key Responsibilities
Safety and Employee Leadership
  • Lead daily safety meetings and reinforce safe work practices throughout the shift.
  • Maintain a visible presence in operating areas, identify hazards, and stop unsafe work.
  • Enforce company policies, cardinal safety rules, equipment operating procedures, and customer requirements consistently.
  • Respond promptly to incidents, near misses, and safety concerns; secure the area, make required notifications, and support investigations and corrective actions.
  • Assign work based on employee qualifications, training status, staffing levels, and operational priorities.
  • Coach employees, address performance concerns, and document attendance, training, and disciplinary matters as required.
  • Verify employees are trained and authorized before assigning equipment or unfamiliar tasks.
Scrap Yard Operations
  • Coordinate scrap receiving, unloading, sorting, storage, and delivery to support mill production.
  • Oversee scrap bucket preparation and loading, material availability, and timely movement to the melt shop.
  • Monitor material identification, segregation, loading accuracy, and housekeeping.
  • Coordinate cranes, loaders, trucks, and other equipment to maintain safe traffic flow and reduce delays.
Metal Recovery Operations
  • Oversee assigned slag handling, processing, metal recovery, cutting, and material movement activities.
  • Coordinate personnel and equipment to meet production requirements while maintaining safe work practices.
  • Monitor processing performance, recovered material quality, equipment availability, and work area conditions.
  • Identify bottlenecks and coordinate corrective actions with department management and maintenance.
Dock Operations
  • Coordinate safe loading and unloading of barges and associated material movements.
  • Monitor progress against vessel schedules and customer requirements.
  • Confirm proper material identification, placement, and completion of required load and unloading records.
  • Maintain communication among dock personnel, equipment operators, and other departments to prevent delays and unsafe conditions.
Shift Coordination and Reporting
  • Balance labor and equipment across departments as priorities change, in coordination with department managers.
  • Communicate with customer representatives and site leadership regarding production needs, delays, and operating concerns.
  • Coordinate equipment repairs with maintenance and ensure unsafe equipment is removed from service.
  • Track production, downtime, staffing shortages, overtime, and incomplete work accurately.
  • Provide a thorough shift handoff covering safety concerns, equipment status, material needs, and outstanding priorities.
  • Recommend practical improvements to safety, productivity, equipment utilization, and operating costs.
  • Support other site departments as trained and assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferably three or more years of experience in steel mill services, scrap processing, metal recovery, marine terminal operations, heavy manufacturing, or a related industrial environment.
  • Prior supervisory or lead experience directing hourly employees in an industrial setting.
  • Working knowledge of heavy mobile equipment and safe material handling practices.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple work areas, prioritize competing demands, and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and employee accountability skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including email, spreadsheets, and production reporting.
  • Willingness to learn all primary operating areas and complete required site training.
Preferred Experience
  • Leadership experience across more than one operating department.
  • Scrap identification, charge bucket loading, and melt shop support.
  • Slag processing, metal recovery, or industrial cutting operations.
  • Barge loading and unloading or dock material handling.
  • Coordinating cranes, loaders, haul trucks, and related heavy equipment.
  • Incident investigation, employee training, and continuous improvement.
