Job summary

The Salvation Army USA Central Territory in Monroe, Michigan, seeks a dedicated shelter staff member to oversee guest welfare, complete essential paperwork, and foster a safe, harmonious shelter environment. You will supervise common areas, perform intake and exit tasks, and support daily operations with integrity and care.

Responsibilities include managing meals, cleaning, laundry, and basic kitchen duties while upholding Safe From Harm guidelines and confidentiality at all times.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma / GED or equivalent and ability to participate in training.
• 1+ years experience in a shelter environment or similar setting is preferred.
• Must maintain confidentiality and comply with Safe from Harm guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Ensure daily paperwork is completed in accordance with procedure.
• Maintain shelter policy without discrimination.
• Assist with menu planning.
• Supervise common areas, dorms, lounges, clothing closet, and laundry room.
• De-escalate conflict and manage crises with excellent verbal and written communication.
• Perform daily resident/security checks on guests, rooms, and exterior of building.
• General office duties: answering the phone, filing, typing, record keeping, recording shift summary.
• Attend trainings and staff meetings as directed.
• Cleaning and janitorial work; include laundry as needed and floor upkeep.
• Keep dryer vents clear of dust and lint.
• Assist deep cleaning of the kitchen and daily cleaning as needed.
• Accurately track resident medications under supervision.
• Process intake and exit paperwork as needed.
• Handle donations as needed and shelter laundry tasks.

Position Summary:

Provide oversight to shelter guests and complete necessary paperwork, attend to the immediate needs of the guests, and encourage safe and harmonious shelter atmosphere.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Ensure daily paperwork is completed in accordance with procedure
• Maintain shelter policy without discrimination
• Assist with menu planning
• Supervise common areas, dorms, lounges, clothing closet, and laundry room
• De-escalate conflict and manage crises as necessary, excellent verbal and written communication
• Perform daily resident/security check on guests, rooms, and exterior of building
• General Office duties: answering the phone, filing, typing, record keeping, recording shift summary
• Attend all trainings and staff meetings as directed
• Cleaning and janitorial work as required, including laundry as needed
• Keep dryer vents clear of dust and lint
• Assist deep cleaning of the kitchen; assist with daily cleaning as needed
• Floor upkeep, including dining room, office, laundry room
• Accurately track resident medications that are under the supervision of The Salvation Army
• Clean empty rooms once resident has exited as needed
• Communicate shelter supply needs to maintenance or corps officer
• In absence of cook, perform kitchen duties
• Help to resolve conflicts between residents
• Remain on duty until replacement arrives
• Perform other duties as assigned

Additional Responsibilities:

• Handle donations as needed
• Ensure client chore are completed in a timely fashion
• Process in-take and exit paperwork as needed
• Help with shelter and social services laundry upon request

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

• High School Diploma / GED desired; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
• 1 or more years working in a shelter type environment
• Must maintain confidentiality and comply with Safe from Harm guidelines and participate in training classes

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

• Have and maintain ServSafe Certification, or ability to acquire certification within 1 year

Computer Skills:

• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office 365
• Knowledge of TEAMS and SharePoint

Certificates and Licenses:

• Complete Safe From Harm training, and keep current as needed
• Have and maintain current CPR/SED/First Aid certification; or ability to gain certification within 90 days
