Job summary

Northern Virginia Family Service is hiring a Shelter Kitchen Specialist to prepare and serve meals in a busy shelter kitchen while maintaining safety, sanitation, and quality. You will manage inventories, coordinate with staff, and ensure meals meet dietary needs across shifts.

The role emphasizes teamwork, compliance with USDA guidelines, and adaptability to support shelter residents with healthy, well-presented meals.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience in food preparation and safety in high-volume settings.
• Valid Food Handler’s certification.
• ServSafe certification strongly preferred.
• Culinary training is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement weekly rotating kitchen menus with emphasis on nutritious meals and CACFP compliance.
• Coordinate with shelter and Hunger Resource Center staff for inventory and supplies.
• Shop for and transport food supplies to the kitchen.
• Prepare meals for 70–90 people per service period, including continental breakfast and lunch/dinner as shift requires.
• Accommodate dietary needs and special requests; ensure weekend meals and contingency plans.
• Maintain food safety, sanitation, and inventory records; rotate stock and label meals by date.
• Follow emergency contingency plans for weather events or power loss.
• Collaborate with management to review operations efficiency and fiscal integrity.
