Job Title: Shelter Attendant/Veterinary Assistant

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Shelter Attendant/Veterinary Assistant responsible for providing care for shelter animals, maintaining the County animal shelter, and assisting with pre- and post-operative surgical procedures.

1. Perform daily care of animals, including feeding, bathing, medicating, and cleaning up after animals.
2. Maintain cleanliness of the shelter environment.
3. Assist with surgical procedures, including clipping prep areas, intubating/extubating animals, cleaning surgical packs, dispensing medication, removing sutures, and autoclaving surgical instruments.
4. Conduct and assist with physical exams, vaccinations, and euthanasia of shelter animals, and prepare animal carcasses for disposal.
5. Assist with redemption, impounding, and adoption of animals, including trapping, housing assignment, and advertising animals for adoption.
6. Support office and officer personnel by answering phones and dispatching calls.
7. Maintain inventory of supplies such as animal food, medicines, chemicals, and shelter materials.
8. Enter and update animal information in the computer system.

Work Hours and Salary

Hours: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with rotating shifts on weekends and holidays. Emergency work reporting may be required.

Salary Range: $34,008 - $45,911, based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications
