In 2019, the City of Long Beach implemented the Compassion Saves model of shelter operations which ensures that all healthy and treatable animals are saved. The mission of the Long Beach Animal Care Services Bureau is to ensure “Compassion Saves” by supporting the people and animals of our community through outreach, education, guidance, and support services. We protect shelter animals by creating an environment of care through enrichment and innovative programs, and by providing public safety and the humane treatment of animals to nearly 600,000 residents in five cities. With a staff of nearly 50 employees, and an annual operating budget of over $6 million, the Bureau will care for more than 6,000 live animals in 2025.

Long Beach Animal Care Services, a bureau within the Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine, is seeking qualified candidates interested in applying for a full-time Animal Care Attendant (Maintenance Assistant I) position. There are currently four (4) full-time openings. Scheduled shifts may vary by week, but these position will work 40 hours per week, including weekends and holidays. Shifts are typically schedule as follows: 6:00am-2:30pm, 8:00am-4:30pm, 9:00am-5:30pm. These positions report to the Long Beach Animal Shelter on-site at 7700 E Spring St, Long Beach, CA 90815.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

• Under general supervision, assists in providing maintenance, upkeep, and overall sanitation of the animal care facility;
• Cleans and properly disinfects kennels, cages, and buildings utilizing chemical and disinfectant products;
• Cares for, washes, handles, restrains, scans for microchips, contacts animal owners, and feeds impounded animals; utilizes special equipment for handling animals;
• Responsible for monitoring kennel areas to ensure safety and security of animals during public visits;
• Assists the public with the intake of animals and interfaces with the public to provide information related to the care of animals;
• Properly processes the quarantine of animals that have bitten anyone;
• Observes animals for signs of illness or injury and advises the appropriate staff members;
• Responsible for accurate, basicrecord keeping on a computer;
• Under the supervision of a veterinarian or animal health technician, retrieves animals for the medical team, and restrains animals during medical procedures or euthanasia of animals;
• Drive to offsite meetings and/or trainings;
• Perform other duties as assigned.
