Job summary

The Salvation Army is hiring a Shelter Advocate for the West Women’s and Children's shelter in Portland, OR. This full-time, non-exempt role covers swing or graveyard shifts with weekends, and an hourly wage of $24.00–$24.75 DOE.

You will interact directly with survivors, provide crisis support, manage front desk duties, maintain security and clean, organized facilities, and support program operations. Requires a high school diploma or GED and yearly first aid, CPR, and Food Handler’s

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred but not required.
• Education and/or work experience commensurate with duties.
• Must obtain yearly certification in first aid, CPR and a Food Handler’s card.

Responsibilities

• Interact directly with domestic violence survivors and children in shelter.
• Maintain professional relationships while respecting confidentiality.
• Provide information, referrals, crisis intervention, and support.
• Respect confidentiality of client information according to SA policies.
• Answer telephones and greet visitors to the facility.
• Route inquiries and messages and manage program materials.
• Maintain client files and incident logs during shifts.
• Receive and log donations and fees appropriately.
• Remain awake and alert during shifts.
• Respond to crises and notify leadership as needed.
• Operate safety and security systems.
• Conduct visual workplace inspections and security checks.
• Coordinate with coworkers on security and fire watches.
• Keep facilities clean and organized and manage supplies.
• Set up shelter rooms per needs and safety.
• Follow handling of workplace chemicals safely.
• Serve breakfast or lunch as needed to maintain shelter services.
• Report maintenance needs to appropriate personnel.
• Learn and apply new information; work cooperatively and with judgment.
• Ensure timely duty reporting and policy compliance.
• Enforce neighborhood agreements and contracts as required.
• Attend staff meetings and perform other duties.
