Job summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a dedicated Shelter Operations role in the United States (Kentucky region). You will oversee shift operations, coordinate staff and volunteers, conduct intake interviews, supervise residents, and ensure policy compliance.

The position emphasizes crisis response, case referrals, and maintaining a safe, clean shelter environment. Qualified candidates have a high school diploma (associates preferred) and at least two years in human services, including experience with

• Two years’ experience in Human Services, with one year of experience working with the homeless population.

Responsibilities

• Manages, coordinates, and oversees all shift operations, facilitating efficient operation involving program participants, staff, property and supportive services.
• Trains and assists staff and volunteers regarding policies, procedures and record keeping.
• Provide input to management on shelter advocate performance.
• Conducts intake interviews for new shelter residents.
• Monitors room assignments and distributes basic necessities.
• Provides necessary supervision of shelter and residents, ensuring rules and policies are followed.
• Assist with client needs, refer to case manager as appropriate.
• Provide de-escalation and crisis response.
• Answers telephone calls and takes messages when appropriate.
• Maintain cleanliness of shelter common areas.
• Assist with food service preparations and serving.
• Ensures shift is documented according to procedures.
• Performs room inspections.
• Supervises volunteers, when assigned.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent; Associates degree preferred

Minimum Qualifications:
The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent; Associates degree preferred

Experience:

• Two years’ experience in Human Services desired, with one year of experience working with the homeless population.

Full-time employees scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week will be eligible for full benefits, including health, dental, vision and hearing benefits, basic and voluntary life benefits, holiday pay and paid time off, which is pro-rated based on their regularly scheduled work week.

Non-Exempt Employees: Health, dental, vision, and hearing benefits, as well as basic and voluntary life benefits, will begin on the first day of the month following 90 days of employment. If the completion of a 90‑day waiting period occurs on the first day of the calendar month, coverage will begin on that day.

Compensation: $17.84-$22.30/hour, based on experience.
