Job summary

The City of Somerville is seeking a Special Heavy Motor Equipment Operator (SHMEO)/Sewer to perform installation, maintenance, and operation of the municipal sewer system. The role requires operating heavy equipment, reading blueprints, and ensuring safety compliance across daily tasks and emergencies.

Eligible applicants must have a high school diploma, MA Class B license with endorsements, and experience in sewer system operation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent as entrance requirement.
• One year minimum experience operating and maintaining public sewer systems or related construction.
• Valid MA Class B license with air-break and tanker endorsement.
• MA Hoisting License with 2B and 4E restrictions within 120 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain sewer infrastructure equipment safely and efficiently.
• Read engineering blueprints and maps for sewer and drainage systems.
• Respond to emergencies and assist with cross-departmental water/sewer incidents.
• Perform daily vehicle checks and maintenance; report issues to Foreman.
