Job summary

The City of Somerville is seeking a maintenance worker to perform a variety of manual tasks related to the City’s water distribution system. Responsibilities include assisting in installation, repair, and maintenance of mains, service lines, hydrants, and valves, using appropriate tools and procedures to ensure safety and compliance.

Typical duties involve trench work, pipe laying, hydrant work, and participation in emergency response.

Qualifications

• Must be able to perform hard physical labor and lift up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions and report to supervisors.
• Must possess a valid MA CDL and D1 Water Distribution license.

Responsibilities

• Assist in installation, repair, and maintenance of water mains, service lines, hydrants, valves and related infrastructure.
• Operate hand tools and small power equipment to dig trenches, lay pipe, and backfill excavations.
• Support water main breaks and emergency response activities as directed by supervisor.
• Read water meters when needed and participate in valve exercising.
