Job summary

City of Somerville seeks a dedicated SHMEO/Sewer worker to maintain and repair the city’s sewer infrastructure. You will operate heavy equipment, read blueprints, and respond to emergencies to protect public health and safety.

The role requires a high school diploma, a MA Class B license with air-break/tanker endorsement, and a Massachusetts Hoisting License (2B/4E within 120 days). Union benefits apply, with full-time hours and competitive city pay.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent.
• At least 1 year of experience operating and maintaining public sewer and drainage systems.
• Must possess MA Class B license with air-break and tanker endorsement.
• Must have Hoisting License 2B and 4E within 120 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Operates sewer and related equipment in a safe, proficient manner.
• Digs, backfills, and compacts excavations.
• Installs and repairs mains, valves, and drainage components.
• Responds to emergencies and coordinates with Foreman.
• Reads and follows engineering blueprints and maps for sewer systems.
• Maintains vehicles and equipment; conducts daily inspections.
