Job summary

Stephenson Equipment, Inc. is seeking a Service Technician for our Hagerstown, MD branch. You will diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy construction equipment, including diesel, hydraulic, electrical, and powertrain systems, while performing preventive maintenance and testing.

You will read manuals and diagrams, document repairs, and communicate conditions and recommendations to customers and staff, in a safety-focused, team-oriented shop.

Qualifications

• One-year certificate or 12 months related experience or an equivalent combination.
• Ability to read and understand safety, operating, and maintenance instructions.
• Experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy equipment.
• Ability to use hand and power tools and diagnostic equipment.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and diesel systems.

Description

Are you an experienced technician who enjoys diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy construction equipment? Stephenson Equipment, Inc. (SEI) is looking for a Service Technician at our Hagerstown, MD branch to help keep our customers' equipment operating safely, efficiently, and reliably.

As a key member of our service team, you'll diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and diesel systems on construction equipment. You'll perform preventive maintenance, inspections, equipment overhauls, component replacement, and testing while working closely with service personnel, supervisors, and customers to minimize downtime and keep equipment operating at peak performance.

What You'll Do

• Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and diesel equipment issues to determine the cause of malfunctions and required repairs.
• Inspect and operate heavy construction equipment to identify defects, performance issues, and maintenance needs.
• Use computerized diagnostic equipment, gauges, calibration devices, micrometers, and other tools to troubleshoot and evaluate equipment.
• Repair, replace, adjust, and maintain worn or damaged parts and components.
• Dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hand tools, power tools, hoists, jacks, cranes, and other appropriate equipment.
• Repair and maintain transmissions, crawler heads, gear systems, bearings, frames, powertrains, hydraulic systems, and other related components.
• Perform equipment overhauls and repairs to restore equipment to proper operating condition.
• Perform preventive maintenance, including cleaning, lubricating, inspecting, adjusting, and servicing equipment.
• Test equipment following repairs or assembly to verify proper operation and compliance with manufacturer specifications.
• Inspect parts and components for damage, excessive wear, or other conditions requiring repair or replacement.
• Clean parts using appropriate solvents, degreasers, and approved cleaning methods.
• Read and interpret service manuals, operating manuals, wiring diagrams, hydraulic diagrams, technical drawings, and equipment specifications.
• Follow manufacturer specifications and recommended repair procedures.
• Maintain accurate service records and document completed repairs and maintenance activities.
• Communicate equipment conditions, repair needs, and service recommendations to supervisors, service personnel, customers, and other employees.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
• Properly select, use, and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education & Experience

Required

• One-year certificate from a college or technical school; or 12 months of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Ability to read and understand safety rules, operating instructions, maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to complete routine reports and written communications.
• Basic to intermediate knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, powertrains, and mechanical systems.
• Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy equipment.
• Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.

Preferred

• 2–3 years of experience working on heavy equipment.
• Experience working with equipment such as dumpers, trailers, compactors, skid steers, and similar construction equipment.
• Experience with electronic diagnostic systems.
• Experience troubleshooting and repairing hydraulic systems.
• Experience with preventive maintenance programs.
• Experience troubleshooting electrical systems.
• Experience with welding, cutting, machining, or fabrication.
• Technical school, vocational, or related training in diesel technology, heavy equipment, mechanics, or a related field

Physical & Work Environment

This position is primarily performed in a garage or service environment with moderate to loud noise levels and temperatures that may vary seasonally. The position requires extended periods of standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and working around heavy equipment during an 8–10 hour workday. Technicians must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds with assistance from lifting equipment.
