Job description

JOB TITLE: General Service Technician

DEPARTMENT: Service

REPORTS TO: Service Manager

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday

8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Based on business levels some additional hours, including weekends, may be required).

SUMMARY

Performs vehicle repair and maintenance work as assigned in accordance with dealer and factory standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Receive repair orders from dispatcher and take to stall area.
  2. Perform work as outlined on repair order with efficiency and accuracy in accordance with dealership and factory standards.
  3. Diagnose cause of any malfunction and perform repair as authorized.
  4. Communicate with the Parts Department to obtain needed parts.
  5. Tag and save parts, turn in parts, if the job is under warranty or if requested by the customer.
  6. Advise service advisor immediately if any additional work is needed, if work outlined is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed with the promised time.
  7. Document work performed.
  8. Road-test vehicles to ensure repair has addressed the customer complaint.
  9. Quality check work performed.
  10. Attend training classes.
  11. Keep abreast of factory technical bulletins.
  12. Ensure that customers’ vehicles are kept clean.
  13. Administer safety and housekeeping policies and procedures.
  14. Understand and follow federal, state and local regulations governing service repair work.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or, two years of experience in an auto body repair facility, one year of supervisory experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees and to individual customers.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Current, valid driver’s license; satisfactory Motor Vehicle Report (MVR); ASE Certification preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
