Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking a shift supervisor in its corrections system. The role involves overseeing security personnel, ensuring compliance, and guiding staff through investigations and disciplinary actions.

The position requires high school graduation with relevant experience, plus completion of SCDC training and a supervisory course within six months. A bachelor’s degree may substitute for experience.

Qualifications

• Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
• A high school diploma and relevant experience; a bachelor’s degree may substitute for the required experience.
• SCDC training academy certification and completion of the basic supervisory course within six (6) months.

Responsibilities

• Supervises the performance of security personnel assigned to shift.
• Assists with preparation of employee evaluations, disciplinary action and counseling sessions.
• Assists with conducting shift briefings with all officers.
• Remains familiar with all activities during the shift to inform subordinates of changes affecting inmates and operations.
• Makes routine and non-routine security checks of work areas and living area units.
• Conducts formal and non-formal counts.
• Investigates inmate complaints and instructs and counsels inmates as required.
• Monitors inmate movement within the institution.
• Performs all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

• Investigates inmate complaints and takes appropriate action; instruct and counsel inmates as required.
• Monitors inmate movement within the institution.
• Performs essential and marginal duties of subordinates; Performs all other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

• A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

• A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
