Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking a supervisory position within its correctional security team. The role involves overseeing security personnel assigned to the unit, managing custody and control of inmates, and ensuring adherence to safety and OSHA standards.

You will assist with evaluations, disciplinary actions, and shift briefings, and you may be called to perform duties in the Housing Lieutenant’s absence. A valid basic supervisory certification is required within six months of hire.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and relevant experience required.
• A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
• Certification by the SCDC training academy and completion of the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

Responsibilities

• Supervise job performance and appearance of assigned security personnel.
• Assist with employee evaluations, disciplinary action requests, counseling, etc.

• Inspect work areas and security devices to ensure proper operation.
• Assist in conducting counts and investigations of complaints.
• Perform duties of Housing Lieutenant in their absence.
• Maintain OSHA and safety standards.

Job Responsibilities

• Under the supervision of the Housing Lieutenant, is responsible for the overall supervision of security personnel assigned to the unit, and the supervision, custody and control of inmates assigned to the unit.
• Supervises job performance and appearance of assigned security personnel.
• Assists with preparation of employee evaluations, disciplinary action requests, counseling, etc.
• Assists in conducting briefing with officers at the beginning of shift.
• Keeps subordinates informed of all changes affecting inmates and operations.
• Makes random checks to ensure duty performance is within standards.
• Makes routine inspections of work areas and all security devices and equipment to ensure duty performance standards are met and that all devices, doors, and equipment are in proper working order.
• Assist in conducting counts.
• Investigates complaints.
• Performs duties of the Housing Lieutenant in his/her absence.
• Maintains OSHA and safety standards.

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

• A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
