Job summary

The State of South Carolina seeks a security supervisor to oversee inmate custody and the security of facilities. You will direct security staff, perform unit checks, and ensure adherence to OSHA standards while maintaining order and safety.

You will also assist with inmate counts, investigate complaints, and arbitrate disputes. Successful applicants will complete SCDC Basic Training within eight weeks of hire and meet state qualification requirements.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma is required; a related bachelor’s degree may substitute for experience.
• SCDC supervisory experience or a degree in criminal justice may substitute for supervisory experience year-for-year.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

Job Responsibilities

• Under general supervision, plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of Inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security for all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all Inmate counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; Arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

• A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

• A high school diploma and three (3) years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
