Job summary

The Armory Center at Police Athletic League in New York, NY seeks an Armory Center Program Director to lead afterschool and youth programming, coordinating with school partners and PAL centers while ensuring safety and high-quality experiences for youth.

This on-site role focuses on supervising staff, aligning with DYCD and city regulations, and developing engaging SEL, mental health, and inclusion initiatives for diverse youth.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in child development, education, physical education or recreation, or related field, plus 2 years’ youth work.
  • NYS Children’s Program Administrator Credential with 2 years youth experience.
  • SACC Credential with 2 years youth experience.
  • Two years in college with 18 credits in related field and 2 years youth work.
  • Minimum 4 years supervisory experience with youth, including program management and staff supervision.
  • Program planning, implementation, and evaluation skills.
  • Willing to learn mental health, SEL, and inclusion practices.
  • DYCD Connect knowledge preferred; Microsoft Office skills required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication; bilingual preferred (Spanish/French/Chinese).
  • Able to travel to any PAL location in the five boroughs.
  • Work Schedule: Tue–Sat, 1:00–9:00pm; additional days as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Foster social and emotional competencies and well-being in a safe, welcoming, inclusive environment.
  • Oversee Teen Afterschool Programming including mental health support and inclusion coordination.
  • Recruit, hire, and supervise part-time Group Leaders and Activity Specialists.
  • Ensure program aligns with PAL objectives, policies, procedures, and SACC regulations.
  • Develop Youth Development culture; train and coach staff across programs.
  • Coordinate with Principal, Director, Regional Director, SYEP Director, and Headquarters staff.
  • Collect program data and drive PAL decisions with data-driven recommendations.
  • Build partnerships with NYPD, NYCPS, DYCD, DOH and other community partners.
  • Plan citywide programs, activities, and events.
  • Assist in development of future funding grants and proposals.
  • Provide mediation for on-site issues and respond to urgent mental health needs.
