Senior Writer (Communications Publications Writer-Editor)

POSITION DETAILS

The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU), established in 2018, is the newest school in The City University of New York system and the only one explicitly dedicated to public service and social justice. SLU offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Labor Studies and Urban Studies that are designed to meet the needs of working adults as well as traditional-age college students who seek to learn more about the challenges confronting poor and working-class populations in the workplace and in the community. It also collaborates with other units of CUNY to offer a range of college-credit programs designed to give workers the academic and technical skills they need for professional advancement. Its faculty includes distinguished scholars in the social sciences as well as expert practitioners in government, labor, and public service.

CUNY SLU is seeking an experienced staff writer to join the communications and marketing department. Reporting to both the department chief and the Dean of the School, the senior writer will be a trusted strategic partner, helping to shape the school’s narrative through communications, messaging, and tone. This position will support SLU’s traditional communication needs as well as work closely with the Dean on various high-level writing assignments.

The Senior Staff Writer plays a critical role in telling SLU’s story and strengthening engagement with our students, alumni, and institutional partners. The Writer will lead a wide range of projects; developing compelling and persuasive content for the School’s website and promotional material; conducting interviews with students, alumni, and faculty to tell their stories; preparing newsletters and other communications to the School’s community; drafting the Dean’s remarks for commencement, award ceremonies, and other events; and other projects and deliverables as needed. To support organizational goals and initiatives, the Senior Staff Writer works closely with the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer to outline strategy and processes for impactful public relations campaigns and identifies ways to amplify the SLU brand. This will include drafting timely press releases, statements, op-eds, crafting long-term media strategies, as well as curating an on-going list of relevant journalists. As a key member of SLU’s communications and marketing team, this person is expected to work collaboratively and partner with colleagues across the School as needed.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Generates story ideas and composes strong narratives that position CUNY SLU as a national leader in educating future union leaders, elected officials, community activists, authors, organizers, and educators among others;

• Develop messaging that resonates with our target audiences;

• Draft and edit copy for advertising campaigns, marketing brochures, flyers, and social media content;

• Draft and edit scripts for promotional videos;

• Work closely with the Dean on long-form pieces (e.g. funding proposals, annual reports, speeches, etc.) and short-form pieces (e.g., press releases, announcements, etc. )letters to the larger school community, foundation proposals, speeches, etc.);

• Manage multiple communications projects in fulfillment of strategic communications plan;

• Collaborate with various departments across the School to produce other timely content in collaboration with marketing/recruitment efforts or as needed to support the work of the School;

• Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and four years' related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

• A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, advertising or a related field and 5-7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

• Portfolio of published articles or other written work.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary range is $79,188 to $99,532 commensurate with education and experience.
