Job description

Senior Web Developer (WordPress)

Position: Senior Web Developer

About Lakeba

Lakeba is where bold ideas become real businesses. For more than a decade, this proudly Australian group has been building, backing and scaling technology ventures globally, turning ambitious concepts into companies built to compete on the world stage.

The Role
Position

Senior Web Developer (WordPress)

Reports to

Marketing Manager

Works closely with

Design, Marketing, Product and venture leads

Scope

Sole owner of Lakeba's 4 to 5 venture websites

Employment type

India, Coimbatore

We are looking for a Senior Web Developer to take full ownership of Lakeba's website portfolio. This is not a support role: you will be the person accountable for every site we run, from code quality and SEO health to how fast new landing pages go live.

Our Head of Design works in Figma. Your job is to turn those designs into pixel-accurate, fast, accessible and search-friendly WordPress pages, whether that means a fully custom build or a well-structured template. You will set the standards, fix what is broken, and make our websites a genuine growth engine for each venture.

You will thrive here if you have worked in startups before, are comfortable owning outcomes without a large team around you and know how to ship quickly without cutting corners on quality.

We are seeking a skilled Senior Web Developer to join our growing team and take ownership of developing, designing, and maintaining websites across our ventures. Working collaboratively with our development team, you will play a key role in creating exceptional digital experiences that drive our business forward. We're looking for someone who is passionate about web development and eager to grow with our expanding organisation.

What You Will Own

You will inherit a live WordPress portfolio and be its single point of accountability from day one.

  • 4 to 5 group websites: Lead the design and implementation of website pages with responsibility, accountability and precision.
  • The codebase and release pipeline: the Marketing Websites repository in Azure DevOps, Git branching, and release processes from staging to production.
  • The plugin and tooling stack: custom themes, Advanced Custom Fields (ACF), Contact Form 7, Word fence and the third-party integrations behind them (Mailchimp, CRM and Microsoft Dynamics 365).
  • Website operations: backups, access management, hosting on Azure, security patching, uptime and incident response.
  • The website rework roadmap: the current task tracker, prioritisation with stakeholders, and clear status reporting on what has shipped and what is next.
  • Standards: the coding, SEO, accessibility and performance standards every page on every site must meet, documented so the next person can pick them up.
Key Responsibilities
Core responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, and optimise websites using modern web technologies.
  • Create responsive, user-friendly websites from design mock-ups.
  • Customise and extend WordPress functionality through custom themes and plugins.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to implement SEO best practices.
  • Ensure websites are optimised for performance, accessibility, and mobile devices.
  • Manage website hosting environments and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Stay current with emerging web technologies and industry trends.
Figma to WordPress delivery
  • Translate Figma designs from the Design team into pixel-accurate, responsive WordPress pages, flagging build, UX or performance issues early in the design stage.
  • Build both fully custom pages (custom theme templates, ACF flexible content, Gutenberg blocks) and fast template-based pages, choosing the right approach for the deadline and the business goal.
  • Create a reusable component and block library that mirrors the Figma design system, so marketing can launch new pages without new code.
Landing pages and growth
  • Deliver new campaign and product landing pages quickly, typically within days of final design sign-off.
  • Set up forms, Mailchimp lists, CRM and Dynamics 365 lead routing, and conversion tracking (GA4, Google Tag Manager) so every page is measurable.
  • Support A/B tests and continuous improvement of conversion rates.
SEO and semantic HTML best practice
  • Write clean, semantic HTML5 as the foundation of every page: one H1 per page, a logical H2 to H6 hierarchy, correct landmarks, and descriptive alt text.
  • Own technical and on-page SEO across all sites, in partnership with the marketing team: title tags, meta descriptions, canonical tags, XML sitemaps, robots.txt, redirects, internal linking and schema markup.
  • Monitor Google Search Console and run regular SEO audits, fixing crawl, indexing and structured data issues.
Performance, accessibility and security
  • Achieve and maintain strong Core Web Vitals scores (LCP, INP, CLS) through image optimisation, caching, lazy loading and lean code.
  • Build to WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards and test across browsers and devices.
  • Keep WordPress core, themes and plugins updated and secure, manage Wordfence, and remove plugin bloat.
Operations and ownership
  • Manage Azure hosting, Git workflow, Azure DevOps deployments, staging environments and scheduled backups.
  • Act as the first and last line of support for website bugs and outages, with clear root-cause fixes.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation, access records and handover notes for every site.
What We're Looking For
Core requirements
  • Strong proficiency in: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (ES6+).
  • WordPress expertise: custom theme development, plugin customisation, hooks/filters.
  • PHP development: object-oriented programming and WordPress customisation.
  • Database management: MySQL query optimisation and database design.
  • Version control: Git workflow and collaborative development.
  • Responsive design: cross-browser compatibility and mobile-first approach.
Experience
  • 6+ years of professional web development, with at least 4 years focused on WordPress.
  • Proven experience as the lead or sole owner of multiple production websites at once.
  • Previous experience in a startup or scale-up, ideally across more than one brand or venture.
  • A portfolio showing Figma designs you have taken to live WordPress sites, including custom builds.
Technical skills
  • Expert HTML5 and semantic markup, with a real understanding of why heading structure and accessibility matter for SEO.
  • Advanced CSS3 (Flexbox, Grid, custom properties, SCSS) and a mobile-first, responsive approach.
  • Strong JavaScript (ES6+) and jQuery.
  • PHP, including object-oriented PHP, custom WordPress themes (classic and block themes), child themes, hooks, filters, custom post types and taxonomies, plus building custom plugins and customising existing ones.
  • ACF (including flexible content and options pages), Gutenberg block development and Contact Form 7.
  • WordPress security and maintenance, including Wordfence, updates, user roles and backups.
  • Technical SEO: schema markup, sitemaps, canonicals, redirects, Search Console, and tools such as Yoast or Rank Math.
  • Performance optimisation for Core Web Vitals, including caching, CDN, image formats (WebP, AVIF) and code splitting.
  • Git workflows and CI/CD, ideally with Azure DevOps.
  • MySQL: query optimisation, database design and safe migrations.
  • Fluent use of Figma (Dev Mode, auto layout, components and design tokens) and similar handoff tools such as Zeplin, with a solid grasp of UX/UI principles.
Design & SEO Knowledge
  • Design collaboration tools: Figma, Zeplin, or similar.
  • SEO fundamentals: on-page and technical SEO implementation.
  • Understanding of UX/UI principles and web accessibility standards.
Preferred Technical Skills
  • Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (React.js or Angular.js).
  • Azure cloud platform: experience with Azure App Services and Apache server configuration.
  • API integration and RESTful web services.
  • Performance optimisation and caching strategies.
  • Microsoft Dynamics 365 or other CRM integrations with WordPress.
  • Azure App Services, Apache or Nginx configuration and cloud hosting experience.
  • Modern JavaScript frameworks such as React.js or Angular.js, REST API integration and the WordPress REST API, including headless WordPress.
  • Analytics and conversion tracking with GA4, Google Tag Manager and heatmap tools such as Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity.
  • Multisite WordPress or managing a shared design system across multiple brands.
  • Experience building marketing websites for SaaS or AI products.
  • Experience using AI tools to speed up development, testing and content workflows.
Soft Skills
  • Project management: ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
  • Attention to detail: meticulous approach to code quality and testing.
  • Communication: strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Problem-solving: analytical thinking and troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Time management: excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise tasks.
How You Work
  • Ownership: you treat the websites as your product. You spot problems before anyone reports them and you do not wait to be told what to fix. When something breaks, you dig in analytically and solve the root cause.
  • Delivery and agility: you ship in short cycles, manage multiple projects at once, meet tight deadlines, prioritise well across several ventures, and know when a template is good enough and when a custom build is worth it.
  • Design partnership: you work side by side with the Head of Design, respect the craft, and push back constructively when a design will hurt speed, SEO or accessibility.
  • Clear communication: you explain technical trade-offs in plain language to marketers and founders, give honest timelines, and keep the task tracker current.
  • Quality without bureaucracy: you are meticulous about code quality, test thoroughly before you release, document as you go, and keep standards high without slowing the team down.
  • Curiosity: you keep up with WordPress, SEO and web platform changes and bring useful ideas to the table.
