Howard County Government is seeking a Wastewater Plant Operator to join the team responsible for the operation, maintenance, and care of mechanical and electrical equipment in the water reclamation facility. This essential role requires monitoring, sampling, recordkeeping, and occasional supervision of other staff.

The position is classified, with starting salaries between $29.26 and $32.30 per hour, and offers annual compensation ranging from $60,866 to $67,186.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or G.E.D. plus 3 years wastewater treatment experience at the Class 5A level.
• Alternatively, at least 1 year of college coursework in wastewater treatment plus 2 years of 5A-level experience.
• Possession of a regular Class 5A Operator's certificate required; reciprocal licensing considered.

Responsibilities

• Operate plant on assigned rotating shift; monitor gauges, control panels, and process control computers.
• Inspect and maintain mechanical and electrical equipment; perform routine repairs and assist with major repairs as needed.
• Obtain wastewater samples and perform routine lab tests; maintain shift logs and records.
• Direct work of others as needed; may serve as shift supervisor in absence of higher-level staff.
• Report for duty during inclement weather, emergencies, and on-call duties; perform other related tasks as assigned.
