Job summary

SECU Credit Union in Maryland is seeking a VP, Corporate Counsel to oversee daily legal functions, safeguard members, and ensure regulatory compliance. The role requires directing department policies, procedures, and reporting while mitigating legal risks.

The position entails providing timely guidance to management and staff, reviewing contracts, coordinating with outside counsel, and supporting SECU initiatives.

Qualifications

• JD required and Maryland license to practice law.
• CUCO or CRCM certification required or must be obtained within the first year of employment.
• 10+ years of experience supporting legal and regulatory compliance operations of a financial institution.
• 2-3 years management experience preferred.
• 5 years’ experience actively practicing law in Maryland required.
• Credit Union experience preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership, guidance, and training to direct reports; oversee staff performance and evaluations.
• Develop and implement department policies, procedures and reporting.
• Provide legal support for Complaint Management Program; advise on systemic issues and remediation.
• Provide timely legal guidance to management and staff; perform research on legal/regulatory inquiries.
• Review, draft and formalize all legal documents and contracts to meet SECU standards.
• Represent SECU in court actions as required; negotiate outcomes/settlements as appropriate.
• Monitor regulatory developments to advise leadership; foster a culture of compliance and legal awareness.
