Qualifications

• 7+ years editing in a newsroom environment with a focus on visual journalism.
• Substantive experience in one of: Design, Information graphics, Video journalism or Photojournalism.
• Conceive and create stories that combine video, photography, text and audio.
• Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong editorial judgment and design sensibility translating priorities into multimedia storytelling.
• Knowledge of Photoshop and Premiere.
• Entrepreneurial and digital mindset aligned with Times values.

Responsibilities

• Conceive, commission and edit special projects across story forms.
• Lead large-scale, quick-turnaround visual projects aligned with the Special Projects mission.
• Serve as a nexus between newsroom, business, R&D and subbrands.
• Engage with business and advertising on confidential partnerships as part of editorial presentation.
• Collaborate with freelance staff, visual desks, and other teams to deliver ambitious visual projects.
• Manage staff and freelance reporters among other contributors.
• Shape editorial ideas into visual and multimedia opportunities.
• Act as project manager: call meetings, set deadlines, provide feedback, support development.
• Collaborate with editors, video, photo, graphics editors, designers and art directors.
• Help drive the desk to create new digital experiences and story forms.
• Guide the team toward fluency in new story forms.
• Show editorial judgment with editors, standards and legal for ethical questions.
• Support journalistic independence and the mission to seek truth.
• Report to a Deputy Managing Editor.
