Job summary

The New York Times Company in New York, NY is seeking a seasoned Photo Editor to oversee photography and video for the Business desk across platforms. You will lead and develop pitches with strong visual potential, and drive innovative digital story forms.

You should bring passion for multimedia journalism and broad knowledge of current visual formats, with the ability to guide staff and freelance photographers and collaborate with editors across desks.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in a newsroom or equivalent.
• Experience assigning and directing photojournalists in various situations.
• Expertise in handling electronic images, photography usage and copyright issues.
• Strong technical skills with digital tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools and social media platforms.

Responsibilities

• Conceive, pitch, develop, edit, pace and build powerful visual stories for multiple platforms.
• Maintain high standards of photography and multimedia assigning for feature, news and enterprise stories across platforms.
• Identify, vet and onboard new contributing photojournalists.
• Collaborate with writers, reporters, editors and photographers to shape ideas into visual stories.
• Demonstrate editorial judgment with editors and legal for vetting, copyright and ethics.
• Coordinate with editors and security to ensure safety of photojournalists in the field.
• Maintain desk photo budget and process invoices.
