We are partnering with an established and growing mechanical contracting organization to hire a Senior VDC Technician for its expanding Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) team. This position offers an opportunity to work at the intersection of 3D modeling, construction coordination, prefabrication, and field installation, helping translate engineering designs into detailed, fabrication-ready models and drawings. Unlike a traditional drafting position, you'll work closely with Project Managers, engineers, field foremen, and installation crews to ensure that what gets modeled can actually be built efficiently in the field. The organization continues to invest in its VDC capabilities and prefabrication operations, creating a strong opportunity for an experienced technician who wants meaningful project ownership and a potential path into VDC leadership. The Opportunity As a Senior VDC Technician, you'll develop and coordinate detailed mechanical and plumbing models that support construction and prefabrication. You'll work with Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Fabrication, Navisworks, and specialized spooling software to create coordinated models, shop drawings, spool drawings, and material documentation. You'll also participate in coordination meetings, identify clashes before construction, collaborate with field teams, and help establish best practices as the VDC department continues to grow. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys the technical side of BIM but also wants to see their work come to life through real-world construction.
Responsibilities
- What You'll Be Doing Mechanical & Plumbing BIM Modeling Develop detailed LOD 400 mechanical and plumbing models using Autodesk Fabrication for Revit
- Translate construction documents and approved equipment submittals into accurate, fabrication-ready models
- Create and maintain Revit families based on manufacturer specifications and approved submittals
- Produce detailed mechanical and plumbing shop drawings
- Develop spool drawings using eVolve, Stratus, or similar fabrication software
- Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs) for piping systems and related components
- Ensure models comply with applicable construction standards, specifications, and codes
- VDC Coordination & Clash Detection Participate in MEP coordination meetings with engineers, architects, general contractors, and other trades
- Perform clash detection and generate coordination reports using Navisworks
- Identify and resolve conflicts between mechanical, plumbing, structural, and other building systems
- Collaborate with project teams to develop practical installation solutions
- Maintain accurate coordination documentation and communicate design changes
- Prefabrication & Field Collaboration Support prefabrication planning and model-to-shop workflows
- Coordinate with pipefitting, plumbing, and sheet metal teams to ensure models support efficient fabrication and installation
- Visit active construction sites for field surveys, quality-control checks, and installation coordination
- Work with field foremen to troubleshoot installation challenges
- Identify opportunities to improve prefabrication efficiency and reduce field rework
- Project & Technical Support Partner with Project Managers on RFIs, change orders, and preconstruction reviews
- Assist engineering teams with production drawings, submittals, and equipment coordination
- Manage modeling deliverables across multiple active projects
- Contribute to VDC standards, databases, workflows, and process improvements
- Help mentor developing technicians and support the continued growth of the VDC department
Qualifications
- Associate's degree in CAD/Drafting, Mechanical Design, or a related technical field, or equivalent hands-on experience
- 2+ years of drafting experience using Revit, AutoCAD, or comparable BIM/CAD software
- 2+ years of experience in MEP engineering, mechanical/plumbing construction, or a closely related field
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical documentation
- Strong understanding of mechanical and/or plumbing construction practices
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Ability to coordinate effectively with engineers, Project Managers, contractors, and field personnel
- Ability to manage multiple project deadlines and priorities
- Willingness to visit active construction sites as needed
Skills
- We're looking for someone who understands that successful VDC is about more than creating a good-looking 3D model.
- The ideal candidate understands how mechanical and plumbing systems are installed, can anticipate coordination challenges, and takes pride in producing accurate drawings that make construction and prefabrication more efficient.
- Candidates with experience working for a mechanical contractor, design-build contractor, MEP subcontractor, or prefabrication-focused construction organization will be particularly attractive.
- We're also open to candidates who developed their technical foundation in the field and transitioned into BIM, CAD, or VDC work.
Preferred

- Navisworks clash detection and BIM coordination experience
- Experience producing LOD 400 mechanical or plumbing models
- Familiarity with eVolve and/or Stratus for spool drawing production
- Experience supporting mechanical or plumbing prefabrication
- Knowledge of Minnesota mechanical and plumbing codes
- Design-build construction experience
- Experience supporting RFIs, change orders, and construction coordination
- Familiarity with piping systems, HVAC, and mechanical equipment layouts
